A musical that you’ll really dig…
By Christopher Bernhardt
What do you like best about musical theater? The music….the dancing… the
costumes…the sets….the sheer over-the-top spectacle of it all? Me? I love all of it;
every single little thing. Thanks to Mom, I was introduced to the genre of musical
plays via movies like Thoroughly Modern Millie, Cabaret, Victor/Victoria, The Sound
of Music and Little Shop of Horrors, just to name a few. I always imagined myself
singing and dancing on stage, and I used to practice…a lot! (My poor parents and
their eardrums!) When I finally came to the realization that performing in a musical
was probably not my forte, I focused on the next best thing: directing one. So here
we are, on the cusp of seeing that dream fulfilled and you, the audience, are
playing the most important part.
Based on a series of short stories by Damon Runyon,
Guys and Dolls is set in New York City and takes a
comic look at what life might have been like in the
1950s. There are gamblers, show girls, and “Save-ASoul” missionaries among the unforgettable
characters. The show debuted on Broadway in 1950
and has been revived frequently (three on Broadway
and three in London), featuring actors such as Faith
Prince, Nathan Lane, Bob Hoskins, and Lauren
Graham. A 1955 film adaptation starred Marlon
Brandon and Frank Sinatra as Sky Masterson and
Nathan Detroit. There is good reason why this musical
has been delighting audiences for over 60 years, and
now, at the Little Theatre of Virginia Beach, you will get
to see why.
