[email protected] High Point Theatre Announces 2013-2014 Season Schedule features more world-class artists and performances than any prior season in the venue’s 38 year history. High Point, North Carolina, Monday, June 3, 2013 – Since 1975, Triad residents have been able to count on the High Point Theatre to fill their fall, winter and spring months with a fantastic and diverse selection of worldrenown artists and performances. Regular patrons know the Theatre’s intimate atmosphere, continental seating and fine acoustics make it one of the Triad’s best venues for taking in a live show. Featuring a total of fifteen well-loved and critically acclaimed musicians, side-splitting comedies, and special holiday-themed events, the Theatre’s 2013-14 “Passport to Entertainment” season is set to be nothing short of sensational. The season will kick off on Saturday, October 5, with a nostalgic trip back to the 60’s and 70’s when the duo of visionary pop-rock recording artists Gary Wright and Rick Derringer take command of the stage to perform such classic favorites as “Dream Weaver,” “Really Wanna Know You” and “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo” and “Hang on Sloopy.” With careers that span 40 years, both artists can probably be expected to throw in a bit of their more contemporary selections for good measure, resulting in a one-of-a-kind musical experience long to be remembered. The following weekend, Saturday, October 12, the sharp wit and insightful point of view of political comic and pianist Mark Russell, will offer Triad residents a rollicking good time as he shares his thoughts on the shenanigans of our “hired help” up in Washington. Russell spent 30 years on public television as host of the "Mark Russell Comedy Specials," where it was consistently among the top-rated shows on that network. As he sees it, as long as there are newspapers and politicians around, there will be “merriment to draw from the pomposity of public life.” The month of November brings us yet another iconic musician whose musical career remains just as strong now as when he first started back in the late 60’s. On Saturday, November 2, guitarist David Bromberg brings his quirky, humorous lyrics and diverse musical styles – folk, blues, bluegrass, ragtime, country and rock & roll – to the Theatre for a wildly eclectic single live concert. On Saturday, November 16, the first half of the season closes with Atlanta’s funny-man James Gregory. Using home spun comedy, common sense wisdom, old fashioned values and politically incorrect humor, Gregory will share his rib-tickling reflections on life from the front porch. Hard-rocking, blues-soaked guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Tinsley Ellis, opens up the New Year on Saturday, January 11. Since first hitting the national scene in 1988, Ellis has toured non-stop and released one critically acclaimed album after another. Jamming with focus and purpose, this fast-moving, high-energy, live blues-rock concert is sure to shake us out of our post-holiday, deep winter doldrums! On January 25, we change gears yet again as the Tony nominated Broadway revue Smokey Joe’s Cafe arrives to showcase the lyrics and music of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, two prolific songwriters who virtually invented the genre of rock and roll. Featuring 39 of the greatest hits from the 50’s and 60’s, join us for a retro celebration of this golden age of American culture. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14, it’s a night of mega hits by The Hit Men, amazing performers, superb musicians, superior vocalists, arrangers and composers, whose members were stars of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Tommy James & The Shondells and other hit acts of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. An optional dinner package will also be available before the show to provide for the ultimate romantic evening with your beloved! The following evening, Saturday, February 15, Nor’leans own native son Jonathan Batiste and his Stay Human band will take area jazz enthusiasts on a musical journey of world-class, soul-to-soul, New Orleans-style jazz at its absolute best. At 27, Jon has already reached a well-deserved iconic artist status, having performed in over 40 countries, collaborated with Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick, Jr. and filmmaker Spike Lee, just for starters. As we exit winter and look ahead into spring, the month of March is filled with an outstanding array of entertainment options, five of them to be exact! Starting on March 4, we’ll be celebrating Mardi Gras’ in true New-Orleans style with Louisiana’s “national treasure” Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience…Laissez les bons temps rouler! March 15 brings us Broadway’s Next H!t Musical, an all improvised and unscripted theatrical awards show based on the audience’s input and participation. Seven-time Grammy nominated “Renaissance Man” John McCutcheon, one of the most respected and beloved folksingers on the scene today, will showcase his powerful singer-songwriter and storytelling talents, live on stage, Friday, March 21. Direct from Ireland, Celtic Nights: Emigrants Bridge brings us the traditional ballads, vivid choreography and the story of a rich heritage of the Celtic people as they struggle to find their place in a changing world, Sunday afternoon, March 23. And, closing out the month on Saturday, March 29, the incredibly funny Etta May and the Southern Friend Chicks (Trish Suhr, Sonya White and Karen Mills) have busted out of the Hen House for a night on the town – it’s a “Cage-Free Comedy Tour” romp through the south that you do not want to miss! Not quite sure how best to describe them – gypsy, folk, cabaret, blues, swing, mime, puppetry and more – the Vancouver, BC-based band, Maria-In-The-Shower, stops by on Thursday, May 1. Inspired by wandering minstrels and vaudeville, this unique ensemble can be expected to bring us…well, the unexpected. Closing out the season is a fitting tribute to the legendary Doc Watson, considered by many to be a national treasure who passed away on May 29, 2012. Grammy award winners David Holt, Bryan Sutton and T. Michael Coleman have each been inspired and influenced by his life and legacy. Join the trio as they pay tribute to the remarkable musical career of Doc Watson through story and song. This event may also feature some surprise guests. “I hope that you enjoy our offerings for the 2013-14 season,” says High Point Theatre Director David Briggs. “We believe the variety of world class entertainers is eclectic and engaging, providing you with a passport to the world. Be sure to grab one of our season brochures and collect the autograph of each artist for that special keepsake you will treasure always.” For tickets and information, please call the High Point theatre box office at (336) 887-3001 during regular business hours (Mon-Fri, 12 noon–5 PM) or visit our website at www.highpointtheatre.com.
