Maples Rep receives much needed support from the

CHICAGO
Take a look. Then, look
again. Clearly, one look is not
enough.
First impressions are one
thing, but when you stop and
do a DOUBLE TAKE you
discover information you may
have missed.
•
Beauty or brains alone
may not guarantee
happiness.
•
Institutionalized eccentrics
may be wiser than their
keepers.
•
A calm surface may belie
chaos underneath.
•
Looking back may help
inform a way forward.
•
Those sweet old ladies
may be poisoning
unsuspecting passers-by.
This season at Maples
Repertory Theatre we invite
you to enjoy one DOUBLE
TAKE after another, as
our cast of characters get
themselves in (and usually out
of) sticky situations.
When folks first hear about
Maples Rep they can’t believe
a professional theatre could
be thriving in rural North
Missouri. We ask them to
do a DOUBLE TAKE and
once they come experience
one of our shows, they are
convinced that entertaining,
high-quality live theatre is not
only in St. Louis, Chicago or
New York, but on stage at
the Royal Theatre in Macon,
Missouri.
For our 12th season we have
assembled a company of
talented actors, designers,
musicians and technicians
from across the country.
They are here to rehearse
and perform, but the show
isn’t complete without an
audience. We need YOU to
react, respond and make the
magic of theatre thrive.
Come join us. Do a DOUBLE
TAKE. See a DOUBLE TAKE.
Bring a friend. Make a friend.
Todd J. Davison
Cheers,
Todd J. Davison

Curious Savage
Wealthy widow Ethel Savage
has been committed to a mental
institution by her children, who are
angry that she wants to leave all her
money to charity rather than give
it to them (“anyone who would just
GIVE all that money away can’t be
sane”). At The Cloisters Mrs. Savage
meets a houseful of eccentric
characters whose kindness and
loyalty contrasts starkly with the
“respectable” public figures outside.

By John Patrick
Rated G
“People say ‘I love you’ all the time—
when they say, ‘take an umbrella, it’s
raining,’ or ‘hurry back,’ or even ‘watch
out, you’ll break your neck.’ There are
hundreds of ways of wording it—you
just have to listen for it.”
•4•
John Patrick’s parable about greed,
age, love, and a whole host of
other important topics will have you
smiling, nodding your head and
laughing out loud as the feisty old
lady turns the tables on her greedy
children, exposing them as frauds
while she demonstrates the power
of love to heal the damaged and
forgotten.
A charming comedy for all ages.
Pump Boys & Dinettes
If you drive a ways outta town,
somewhere between Frog Level and
Smyrna, you’ll find the Double Cupp
Diner—right across the blacktop
from LM and Jim’s filling station.
When they break out the guitars
to play their high-octane blend of
country, bluegrass and folk music,
we guarantee you’ll have a good
time. The Cupp Sisters will tempt
you with a second cup of coffee and
homemade pie while the Pump Boys
serenade you with hits about life,
love and fishing like: “Farmer Tan”
and “The Night Dolly Parton was
Almost Mine.”
This fast-paced, hand-clappin’, footstompin’ fun features Maples Rep
Favorites Sean Riley and Cheyenne
Nelson.

A Funny Thing Happened on the
Way to the Forum
Broadway’s greatest farce is a
non-stop laugh fest that takes
comedy back to its roots, combining
situations from 2000 year old
Roman comedies with the infectious
energy of classic vaudeville.
A crafty slave struggles to win the
hand of a beautiful but slow-witted
courtesan for his young master in
exchange for freedom. The plot
twists and turns with cases of
mistaken identity, slamming doors,
and a showgirl or two.
7/24-8/9
Book by Bert Shevelove and
Larry Gelbart
Music and Lyrics by
Stephen Sondheim
Rated PG
“Tonight I am pleased to announce:
A Comedy...We will employ every
device we know in our desire to
divert you.”
The first hit for legendary composer
Stephen Sondheim and Larry
Gelbart (creator of television’s long
running hit, M*A*S*H), A FUNNY
THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY
TO THE FORUM is light, fast-paced,
witty, irreverent and one of the
funniest musicals ever written.
Church Basement Ladies
“Everyone knows a Church
Basement Lady...here below the
House of God...you betcha!”
The ladies are back with an allnew musical and are once again
required to face change head-on.
Take a trip to 1960 where Beverly is
turning 15 and gets her first pair of
high heels for Confirmation; Karin
is finally learning how to drive her
husband’s pickup; Mrs. Snustad and
Mrs. Gilmerson plan a food booth at
the county fair to raise money and
the Pastor announces his pending
nuptials.
Against the shifting tide, these
pillars of the church stand strong
with more crazy antics, great songs
and lessons reluctantly learned. No
one can dish out love, life and a
casserole like the Church Basement
Ladies. This is most certainly true.

Forever Plaid:
In one of the American theatre’s funniest
comedies, we meet the charming
and innocent Brewster sisters who
are devoted to charity and family. But
they have taken on another project as
well—relieving the loneliness of older
gentlemen by inviting them in for a nice
glass of home-made elderberry wine
laced with arsenic, strychnine and “just
a pinch” of cyanide.
10/16-11/1
By Joseph Kesselring
Rated G
“Men don’t just get into window seats
and die!”
“Of course not, dear. He died first.”
“ But how?”
“The gentleman died because he drank
some wine with poison in it. Now, I don’t
know why you’re making such a big
deal over this. Don’t you worry about a
thing!”
When their nephew learns of their
hobby, he must deal with the local
police, his lovely finance and his two
brothers, one of whom thinks he’s
Teddy Roosevelt and the other who
has had plastic surgery to disguise his
appearance.
Maples Rep is proud to present the play
The New York Times called “so funny
that none of us will ever forget it.”
Plaid Tidings
“Here we are as in olden days…
faithful friends who are dear to us,
gather near to us once more.”
The Plaids, your favorite heavenly
boy group, are back for another
posthumous performance just
in time for the holidays! Frankie,
Sparky, Jinx and Smudge return to
Maples Rep after their summer 2014
appearance where they wove the
magic of 50’s and 60’s music into
the hearts of everyone. Rosemary
Clooney has encouraged the boys
to return to Earth to bring a little
harmony into a discordant world.
You’ll love The Plaids famous fastforward version of the Ed Sullivan
Show (this time featuring the
Rockettes, the Chipmunks and the
Vienna Boys Choir) and an all-new
Plaid Caribbean Christmas will put
the “Day-O” in Excelsis! So stuff
your stockings with 1950’s tunes
and Holiday gems like “Let It Snow”
and “Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas.”
