PERFORMANCE TASK : Manufacturing Analyst: Carbon Fiber
BIG IDEA:
Matter has observable physical properties and the potential to mix and form new materials.
Environmental laws and regulations impact humans, the environment, and the economy in both positive and negative
ways.
People acting individually and/or as groups influence the environment.
A technological world requires that humans develop capabilities to solve engineering and technological challenges and
improve products for the way we live.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
How is the periodic table organized?
How can materials with the same chemical composition be so different?
What are the positive and negative effects of environmental laws and regulations on humans, the environment, and the
economy?
How do humans influence the environment?
How have technological developments impacted devices, processes, and systems to fulfill human wants and needs?
OVERVIEW:
Climate change refers to a change in the state of the climate that can be identified (e.g., by using statistical tests) by changes in
the mean and/or the variability of its properties, and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer. Climate
change may be due to natural internal processes or external forcings such as modulations of the solar cycles, volcanic
eruptions, and persistent anthropogenic changes in the composition of the atmosphere or in land use (IPCC, 2014).
GOAL:
Your composite company is a member of the International Composite Manufacturers Association (ICMA). This advocacy group
is conducting a panel presentation at an upcoming meeting of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
(IPCC). You and three other representatives have been asked to develop materials and a presentation to persuade the IPCC to
support a resolution related to the funding and development of carbon- fiber composites. This resolution would help finance
research into less expensive methods of development.
Carbon fiber is a lightweight material used in composites. It is typically blended with some type of epoxy. To create these
composites, companies use time, temperature, and pressure to create strong, lightweight materials that can be molded for a
variety of purposes. These composites are now used in industries as varied as aerospace, automobile, and wind energy.
ROLE:
Your task is to convince the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to invest more money in the
research and development of carbon fiber composites. The rationale for this request is based upon the materials used in wind
turbines and new, more fuel-efficient cars and planes.
AUDIENCE:
Your audience will be members of the IPCC and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). They are looking for short and
long-term solutions to concerns about climate change based upon the findings in their latest report. Your team will need to
convince them that carbon-fiber composites have great value in reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere through greater
fuel efficiency and utilization in alternative energy sources. Through their scientific and economic backing, the carbon-fiber
composites industry could rapidly develop through research and the development of cost-effective methods of production.

SITUATION:
Climate change refers to a change in the state of the climate that can be identified (e.g., by using statistical tests) by changes in
the mean and/or the variability of its properties, and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer. Climate
change may be due to natural internal processes or external forcings such as modulations of the solar cycles, volcanic
eruptions, and persistent anthropogenic changes in the composition of the atmosphere or in land use (IPCC, 2014).
The full report may be accessed below: Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability http://ipccwg2.gov/AR5/report/
The final report draws conclusions related to Climate-resilient pathways and transformation
(C-2). It is this area where the utilization of carbon-fiber composites can be very useful.
Climate-resilient pathways are sustainable-development trajectories that combine adaptation
and mitigation to reduce climate change and its impacts (IPCC).
This report is gaining worldwide attention with governments and organizations looking for economically and technologically
sustainable opportunities to help. Carbon-fiber composites may be a material that can help, based upon its properties and
utilization, in numerous transportation and energy industries.
PRODUCTS:
Brochure
Create a brochure that can be distributed internationally. This brochure should also be accessible through the website.
This brochure should accomplish two goals. First, it should provide a flow chart or other visual showing people how the
creation of carbon-fiber composites occurs. The second goal is to identify ways that carbon fiber is being utilized in the
airplane and automotive industries. Additionally, how does it benefit the wind industry?
Multimedia Presentation
Create a presentation for the IPCC and WMO members that can also be used to engage visitors in the website.
Incorporate the Periodic Table to demonstrate how the chemical properties of carbon compare with other elements that
may be used in manufacturing. Be able to explain the benefits and potential liabilities based upon the chemical
properties of these elements for manufacturing. Within this presentation be sure to provide information related to the
resulting properties of this material, and how they can help industry adapt their practices to minimize negative impacts
on the environment.
Panel Presentation
Your team will have 6-8 minutes to present to the IPPC group regarding your beliefs related to the positive impact
carbon-fiber composites can have on global warming in the international community. Your team will need to design the
panel presentation with each team member involved in the presentation. Your team should make strategic use of digital
media to enhance your evidence and reasoning. Be sure your panel is organized and conveys a clear and distinct
perspective.
Press Release
Create a press release supporting the need for the financing of research and development within the carbon-fiber
composite industry. This support should be based upon the connections to global warming, and how this industry can
help and support initiatives brought forth through the IPPC report.
Webpage
The International Composite Manufacturers Association (ICMA) website will be setting up a special section that can be

linked to the organization's homepage. Your team will need to design this webpage in a user-friendly manner to gain
support for your international initiative. The support of global citizens will be critical to the adoption of a resolution. This
webpage should incorporate the other products, as well as an archive of your presentation to the IPPC.
