Our Solar System By Allison Lewis The Solar System has four inner planets. The four inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The Solar System also has four outer planets. They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Our Sun The Sun is the largest object in the Solar System. The Sun is an “ordinary” star. The sun is personified in many mythologies. The sun can change different colors to how hot or cold it is. Mercury Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. It circles faster than all the other planets. Mercury is smaller in diameter than the moons Ganymede and Titan. Venus Venus is the second planet closest to the sun and is the sixth largest. Venus’ orbits is the most circular of that of any planet. Venus is named after female fingers. Earth Earth is the planet we live on. Earth is surrounded by water and land. Earth is the third planet from the sun and the fifth largest. The Earth is smoother than a bowling ball. Mars Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. The color of Mars is a rust color. Mars is the last inner planet. The Asteroid Belt Asteroids are small bodies of the Solar System. The Asteroids also orbit around the sun. The Asteroid Belt orbits between Mars and Jupiter while going around the Sun. Jupiter Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. Also it is by farthest the largest planet. Jupiter is more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined. Saturn Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. It is the second largest. Saturn is the god of agriculture. Uranus Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. It is the third largest planet. Uranus is larger in diameter but smaller in mass than Neptune. Neptune Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun and the fourth largest. It is smaller in diameter but larger in mass. In Roman mythology, Neptune was the god of the sea. The Dwarf Planet Pluto Pluto is much smaller than the official planets. It is smaller than seven other Solar System’s moons. The Dwarf Planet Pluto’s diameter is 2,306 Kilimeters. Galaxy Galaxies are sprawling space systems composed of dust, gas, and countless stars. The number of galaxies can’t be counted. Comet Comet is a icy body. Comets include dust, ice, and carbon dioxide. Comets orbit the sun. Universe The Universe is being constantly created and being destroyed. The Universe spans diameter of over 150 billion. Other Dwarf Planets There are 5 Dwarf Planets in our Solar System. The names of the 5 Dwarf Planets are Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. Telescope A telescope is used to see objects far away. There are a wide range of telescopes that work in different ways. They were first being used at the start of the 17th century. Constellations A constellation is a group of stars that form a pattern. There are different constellations like Lepus the hare. Other Stars Stars are giant spheres of plasma. There is many kinds of different stars. There is big stars and little stars, pink stars and blue stars.
