Cellular Respiration
What is respiration?
What is respiration?
• When we breathe oxygen into our lungs and
release carbon dioxide.
CO2
(Carbon Dioxide)
Oxygen
Where does the Oxygen go?
Where does the Oxygen go?
1. Oxygen diffuses into the blood.
Where does the Oxygen go?
1. Oxygen diffuses into the blood.
2. Blood travels around the body.

3. Oxygen diffuses into the cells.
Plants also respire!
They take in oxygen and “breathe”
out CO2
What happens in the cell?
• Food and oxygen combine to form energy.
• Sugar + Oxygen  ENERGY + Carbon Dioxide + Water

Where does cellular respiration
happen in the Cell?
• Cellular respiration happens inside the
mitochondria in the cell.
Respiration in the Cells
• Cellular respiration - when our cells use
oxygen to break apart sugar in order to
release energy (ATP).
• It is the opposite reaction of Photosynthesis
(Photosynthesis backwards is Cellular
Respiration!)

Do plant cells do cellular
respiration too?
• YES!! Why?
– Plants produce glucose (energy storing sugar)
through photosynthesis, but they still need to
make that sugar usable for the cell.
– They use the process of cellular respiration to
make usable energy (ATP) for the cell.
– This process also happens in the mitochondria of
the plant cells.
