Running head: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Annotated Bibliography Layla Cherradi Azusa Pacific University Master of Arts in Digital Teaching and Learning EDUC 526 Dr. Jennifer Courduff 0 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Books Glencoe Science (2007). Focus on Physical Science: Student Edition. McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. This is the student edition that we use in our middle school 8th grade science class. It meets the California State Standards and includes technology resources for teacher and student. The student edition textbook will be used throughout my unit plan. Students will be introduced to each lesson with the textbook first. Students will use both the textbook and various technologies to expand their knowledge about the topics covered in each lesson. On Day 3, 4, and 7, students will complete a mini-lab on pg. 464, 466, and 477. On Day 8, they will use their textbook to find the difference between comets, asteroids, and meteoroids. On Day 11 & 12, they will use their textbook to research which planet to choose for their iMovie Presentations and to complete the Planetary Information Packet. Glencoe Science (2007). Focus on Physical Science: Teacher Wraparound Edition. McGrawHill Companies, Inc. This is the Teacher Wraparound Edition that we use in our middle school 8th grade science class. It meets the California State Standards and includes technology resources for teacher and student. The foundation of my unit plan is aligned with the Teacher Wraparound Edition. I have used the mini labs with a few technology modifications in my unit plan as well. Since the Teacher Edition is strictly aligned with the state standards, I have also used it to assess content knowledge, using their online companion website. Websites Brain Pop (2013). Space. Available at http://www.brainpop.com/science/space/ Moon Phases and eclipse Brain Pop is a website that is commonly used as a resource at the middle school I work at. There are a variety of subjects available, such as Social Studies, Art, Math, Music, Health, English, Technology and Science, which are directly aligned to the academic standards. This website can introduce new topics in an informal learning environment. The students are able to interact with games and quizzes. I have used this website as a resource in my unit plan. Students are able to gather information about Our Solar System by watching educational videos and taking a small quiz. On Day 6 students will watch a video clip on Brain Pop about the Phases of the Moon and Eclipses. Students will take the small quiz at the end of the video clip to test their knowledge of the new concepts learned and use this info to complete the Moon & Eclipses Study Guide. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Earth Sky: Science News, Great Photos, Sky Alerts (2013). Earthsky Communications, Inc. Available at http://earthsky.org Earth Sky is a website that brings together news, great images and videos. It offers current articles about space and earth, such as images of a supernova, a guide to planet watching, and meteor showers. For my unit plan I have included this website as a resource for students to get information about specific events in space and for looking at great images of our galaxy. Feinberg, J. (2013). Wordle. Available at http://www.wordle.net Wordle is website used to create word clouds using a writing piece. The creative word clouds can be used for anything, logos, brochures, and t-shirts. It takes the main ideas or concepts and creates a unique design. Fonts, colors and design patterns can be changed to create a unique cloud. In my unit plan it is used on each writing piece. On Day 5 students will create a Wordle with their first writing piece, which is a dialogue between crewmembers as they enter our galaxy. On Day 10, students will create a Wordle with their second writing piece, a friendly letter to a friend describing an eclipse. I use as one way to assess content and main concepts in each writing piece. Finer, Angela (2013). Just For Kids: The Eight Planets. Available at http://kids.nineplanets.org Just for Kids is a kid friendly website that provides a basic and simplistic understanding of the planets. It is our complex solar system seen through the eyes of a kid, vibrant, in color and interactive. Students are able to take a journey on a rocket ship to a specific planet and learn basic facts such as the planet symbol, temperature, environment, and fun facts. This is exactly what I am using this website for. In my unit plan, students will use this website to research basic and fun facts about the planets. On Day 2 the students use this website to research the way planets move in space and complete The Motion of the Planets Study Guide. On Day 11, the students use this website to research a specific planet for their iMovie Presentations. Glencoe (2010). Focus on Physical Science: California Grade 8. Website Student Center. Chapter 11: Our Solar System. Available at http://glencoe.mcgrawhill.com/sites/0078741858/student_view0/unit4/chapter11/ This is the companion student website for the Glencoe: Focus on Physical Science Student Edition. This interactive website provides an interactive tutor game, vocabulary ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY eFlashcards, Math Practice, Standards Review and Assessment. All of it is online and specifically aligned with the textbook. In my unit plan students will use this website on Day 7 to study new vocabulary terms with eFlashcards.Students will also take a total of 3 quizzes: one on Day 5 and two on Day 10. The assessments are brief and immediate results are given. Kids.Net.Au (2014). Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion. Available at http://encyclopedia.kids.net.au/page/la/Laws_of_Kepler This website is a kid safe search engine offering a dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, websites, and language translator. Each link is broken down into specific categories such as Arts, People and Society, School Time, Games, Health, etc. In my unit plan I used the encyclopedia link. Students use this website to gain further knowledge about Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion. Kids Know It Network (2014). Johannes Kepler. Available at http://www.kidsastronomy.com/kepler.htm This website serves as a kid friendly environment to research our Solar System through games, puzzles, coloring and jokes. Students can play an online game of hangman, a memory game, or space mad libs. I have used this website in my unit plan to supplement information on Johannes Kepler and his Laws of Planetary Motion. On Day 2 the students use this website to research the way planets move in space and complete The Motion of the Planets Study Guide. On Day 11, the students use this website to research a specific planet for their iMovie Presentations. This is another approved, kid safe website where students are able to get information about the planets and beyond. MindMiester (2014). Miester Labs. Available at http://www.mindmeister.com An online tool used to map out ideas, concepts, or terms. A website that helps with brainstorming and organizing thoughts. It can also be used to take notes and collaborate with others. In my unit plan I use it as a tool for students to organize their thoughts. On Day 1, students make a mind map comparing the day and night sky. On Day 6, students create a mind map to compare a solar and lunar eclipse. Students have the ability to share their mind maps with their peers as well. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Moon Connection (2014). Understanding the Moon Phases. Available at http://www.moonconnection.com/moon_phases.phtml Moon Connection is a website with detailed information about the Earth’s moon. It has everything from The Moon Cycle, to The Moon Diet, to a Moon Phases Calendar. It also gives real time information such as the current moon phase and how much you would weigh on the moon based on your current weight. This website is just dedicated to everything you might want to know about the earth’s moon. In my unit plan I use it to further explain and understand the moons phases and their names. Students are able to see the interaction between the earth, the sun and the moon in the diagram provided in this website. On Day 6 students will use this website to research and use the info to complete the Moon & Eclipses Study Guide. National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Solar System Exploration. Kids: Solar System 101. Available at http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/kids/ This website delivers a plethora of information about our Solar System. The home page offers links such as Planets, Missions, People, Kids, Education, Science and technology. The Kid link Solar System 101 is filled with hours of fun educational online activities from homework helper to cookbooks and games. By clicking on a planet, you can get specific information about a planet such as the most recent missions, fun facts, and image gallery and homework helper. I have used this website for students to research their specific planet for their iMovie presentations. On Day 2 the students use this website to research the way planets move in space and complete The Motion of the Planets Study Guide. On Day 11, the students use this website to research a specific planet for their iMovie Presentations. This website can be used for the upper grade levels, middle and high school. Planets for Kids (2013). Available at http://www.planetsforkids.org Planets for Kids is a very kid friendly resource that offers information about our solar system, but a big focus is on the planets. It can be used to research planets and test your knowledge about the planets with a small quiz. There are other links but they don’t have as much information like the planets do. I have used this website specifically for research purposes. In my unit plan students will be able to gather information using a variety of online resources, this being one of them. On Day 2 the students use this website to research the way planets move in space and complete The Motion of the Planets Study Guide. On Day 11, the students use this website to research a specific planet for their iMovie Presentations. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Sea and Sky (2013). Available at http://seasky.org This website explores the Sea and Sky. There are a variety of interactive links with vibrant pictures. It also offers the latest sea and space news. The reason I used this website in my unit plan is for the astronomy reference guide. On Day 8 and 9, students create a brochure about specific celestial events for the current or upcoming year. These events include solar events, meteor showers, full moons, eclipses, etc. Students are able find real celestial events to share with family and friends. Wiki Spaces Classroom (2013). Available at http://www.wikispaces.com This website is a resource for teachers and students. Teachers are able to keep track of assignments and projects, communicate with students as a group or individually, and give immediate feedback on engagement so students get immediate help. Students are provided with the ability to interact and collaborate with their teachers and peers on assignments and projects in a safe social network. In my unit plan I have used it as a tool to keep track of assignments. Students will upload 2 mind maps, 2 Wordles, 3 Science Lab Reports, 3 Study Guides, and 1 Brochure. This enables me to give immediate feedback on assignments, keep track of participation, and assess content knowledge. iPad/iPhone Apps Garwood, B. (2013). Stick Pick. Available at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stickpick/id436682059?mt=8 This is an application that is available for both iPad and iPhone. It is the technology version of equity sticks. Stick Pick can add multiple classes and students. When adding a student, you are able to add information about the students’ cognitive levels, Bloom’s or Bloom’s Revised, and/or ESL. The app pick students randomly and you have the option to choose whether the student answered correctly or goes back to the drawing board. I use this app in my unit plan when picking groups, when picking who gets to present first, and which group gets to choose their planet on Day 11. It is also used when having a class discussion. This app is very useful and is an awesome replacement to equity sticks. Vito Technology, Inc. (2013). Solar Walk – 3D Solar System Model. Available at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/solar-walk-3d-solar-system/id347546771?mt=8 This is an interactive application for both iPad and iPhone. What makes this app great, are the images, the ability to use it without a wifi connection and real time information about our Solar System and satellites. This app lets you zoom into a star and zoom out to see the entire Milky Way Galaxy. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY In my unit plan students are able to use this if the proper technology is available. Students use it to research information about specific concepts and planets about our galaxy. It is very similar to the NASA website on Solar System Exploration but specifically designed for the iPad or iPhone. Video Clips Bemular - The Planets Song (Educational Kids Music & Video) http://youtu.be/mnTaAoWs-Mo This is a catchy song that introduces the planets in our Solar System and aids in memorizing the order of the planets. The video incorporates some basic fun facts, which might help students remember the different planets. In my unit plan the students watch and listen to this video on Day 1 to learn and memorize the order of the planets. The link to the video will be posted so that students are able to access it and play it over and over to help with memorization. iMovie '11: Importing Photos and Videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9tXMhh8wGo This YouTube video is a short tutorial on importing photos and videos to iMovie. It is brief and to the point. The narrator is easy to understand and directions are not complicated. In my unit plan I use it as a quick review for students when starting their iMovie presentations. This You Tube video is shown on Day 13. Students should have already downloaded all the photos for their presentations to iPhoto and be ready to import them to iMovie. This tutorial will be a quick review for students. iMovie 11 - Adding A Voiceover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ispDOkqr3-8 This You Tube video is a short tutorial on how to add voice over or narration to slides in iMovie. This video is brief and easy to follow and the narrator is easy to understand. It will be used as a refresher for my students before they begin adding narration to their iMovie presentations. This quick tutorial will be used on Day 14. Students should have already added all the pictures and most of the text to their presentations and be ready for adding voice over or narration to their iMovie presentations. Why Does the Moon Change Shape? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhokvJZFURg ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY This You Tube Video can be used as introduction or to explain the phases of the moon. It is short and provides a visual to a complex concept. The video includes text along with images to engage our visual learners. In my unit plan I use this video on Day 6 to explain the different lunar phases and why they are constantly changing. This video clip will be used to introduce the Sun-Earth-Moon System.
