GRADE 5 OVERALL EXPECTATIONS Subject: Music In music, individually and with others, learners will perform a wide repertoire of music. They will sing and use tuned and untuned instruments. They will create, read and notate music. Learners will hear music from different cultures and times and will develop an understanding of the relationship between music, history, culture and other disciplines. (Adopted from the IB PYP Arts scope and sequence 2009) STANDARD 1: singing alone and with others a varied repertoire of music Learners will: ● Sing from traditional notation; ● Sing more complex songs with increasing accuracy, including: 1) singing notes of increased intervals; 2) singing accurate note lengths, 3) being aware of dynamics and tempo; 4) using appropriate singing style; ● Sing with others developing ensemble skills (blending voices) and awareness of audience; ● Develop ability to sing in 3­part harmony; ● Sing songs from variety of times and cultures. STANDARD 2: Performing on instruments alone and with others a varied repertoire of music Learners will: ● Play a wide range of instruments with increasing accuracy in solo and ensemble performances; ● Play at least 7 pitches on a melodic instrument (soprano recorder); ● Perform complex rhythmic and melodic patterns in different simple and compound meters while maintaining steady beat; ● Perform simple two­part instrumental music; ● Perform expressively, to show tempo, dynamics, texture, style and articulation; ● Respond to directions from a conductor; ● Play music using non­traditional and traditional notation (Key of C, G, D). STANDARD 3: Creating music with specified guidelines Grade 5 Music Overall Expectations Learners will: ● Make choices about sounds and organize them in a way that uses basic concepts such as pitch, rhythm, tempo, duration, timbre and dynamic contrasts; ● Organize sounds into simple musical forms (AB, ABA, Rondo) using repetition and contrast; ● Use call and response for vocal, instrumental and movement improvisation; ● Create personal composition using pentatonic scale, diatonic scale and drone. STANDARD 4: Reading and notating music Learners will: ● Identify and use non­traditional notation to represent and record sound; ● Read and notate using basic rhythm values of half, quarter, eighth note pairs, quarter and eighth rest, sixteenth notes, begin to notate dotted rhythms and syncopation in sImple and compound meters; ● Use traditional notation in the treble clef staff. STANDARD 5: Listening to, evaluating, and analysing music Learners will: ● Use appropriate vocabulary to distinguish and describe music elements (tempo – ​
Andante/Moderato/Allegro/Presto; ​
dynamics – Forte/Piano/Cresc./Dim.; articulation – legato/staccato​
); ● Identify the sound sources of a number of instruments, including orchestral (by name and by their orchestral families ) non­orchestral, and multi­ethnic; ● Develop an awareness and appreciation of music from different sources and cultures; ● Distinguish and describe two­part (AB), three­part (ABA) and Rondo form and Major / Minor key. STANDARD 6: Understanding the relationship between music, history, culture, and other disciplines Learners will: Grade 5 Music Overall Expectations Display appropriate concert etiquette for the context and style of music performed; ● Describe / identify few typical music instruments from at least six countries (e.g.Africa – Djembe, Australia – Didgeridoo, Japan – Koto, Russia – Balalaika, India – Sitar, Latvia ­ Kokle); ● Develop an awareness of historical time periods, can identify typical Baroque music (harpsichord), Classical music (Mozart) and Modern music. ●
