BTEC Sport Unit 3 Assessing Risk in Sport There are a number of legislative factors, legal factors and regulatory bodies that are the underpinning factors associated with health and safety within sport activities and events. Research and write a short paragraph to describe each of the following factors. • • • • • • Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) RIDDOR, 1995 NOP COSHH, 2002 National Governing Bodies of Sport Emergency Procedure Protocols Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise Unit 7 Task1. What are Fitness tests? What do they test? Can you come up with some examples? Think about the different fitness tests you have observed or participated in. a) What were the advantages and disadvantages of these tests? b) What factors would you need to consider before carrying these out? a) BTEC NATIONAL AWARD ‘SPORT’ Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise Unit 7 The ability to conduct fitness testing is a vital skill for the sport scientist to possess. All athletes and people starting exercise need to know where they are at any point in time so they can work out how close they are to where they want to be. The aims of fitness testing are to: • • • • • • Ensure that the person is safe to exercise Find out their current position in terms of fitness Identify their strengths and weaknesses Gain information to inform the process of writing a fitness programme Be able to monitor any changes in fitness Show a professional and caring approach Understanding the practice of health screening Before you start to conduct fitness tests with an athlete or a person who wants to start exercise you will need to conduct a detailed fitness consultation. This will consist of the following: • • • • Health screening questionnaire Informed consent form Identification of coronary heart disease risk factors Identification of any causes for medical referral. Health screening questionnaire What type of information would need to be covered in Health screening questionnaire? Informed consent An informed consent form lets a client know what to expect during the exercise test, and the associated risks involved in exercise or training. It also stresses that any participation in the tests is voluntary and you have the choice to stop at any point. What type of medical concerns would you suggest the participant would need to get GP clearance for before you would start to train them? Medical referral To ensure that you offer a proper ‘duty of care’ to your client you will need to refer them to a GP if you have any doubt regarding their safety to exercise. If your client has any of the following they must be referred to a GP. • • • • • High blood pressure Poor lung function Excess body fat (40%+ for female, 30%+ for male) High resting heart rate (100+bpm) Medication for a heart condition (e.g. beta blockers) Or if they experience any of the following: • • • • • • • Muscle injuries Chest pain or tightness Light-headedness or dizziness Irregular or rapid pulse Joint pain Headaches Shortness of breath. Health monitoring tests Tests can be split into two clear categories: those that measure health and those that measure fitness. What do you think is meant by Health tests and fitness tests?
