Sumerian City-States 5000 BCE - 2300 BCE King Shulgi (2100 BCE) The Sumerians developed a system of writing called cuneiform. Sumerians used a wedge-shaped stylus to write on clay tablets. This writing system helped them to record laws, taxes, and trade exchanges. Additionally, the wheel was used by potters to spin clay, and metal workers to sharpen tools!
