Understand what is meant by the following terms: atom, proton, neutron and
electron, isotope, atomic number, mass number, matter, families, period, charge,
atomic mass, ion
Discuss the structure of an atom. How many electrons can each of the first three
energy levels hold? Where is most of the mass of the atom found? Where is most
of the volume of an atom?
How is the periodic table organized and what information can be gained from it? If
the location of an element is described by naming its family and its period, can you
identify it? What is a period? What is a family? Which of these groups contains
related elements?
What is an isotope? Can you write different isotopes in the format we call “atomic
notation”? If shown an atom in atomic notation, can you identify the number of
protons, neutrons and electrons?
Can you identify the charge of an atom if given sufficient information?
What is atomic mass? Why does it have decimal places when the mass number
does not? What is mass number?
What are valence electrons? Can you draw a Lewis Structure? A Bohr diagram?
Can you infer the number of valence electrons an atom has based on its position
on the P.T.?
How are elements in the same family alike? Can you name each of the 8 families?
How many valence electrons do the following families each have: alkali family,
alkali earth family, boron family, carbon family nitrogen family, oxygen family,
halogen family, noble gas family?
