Worksheet 12 Notes
1.
Oregon State University
Dr. Richard Nafshun
What are two products of the citric acid cycle?
Water and carbon dioxide.
2.
Describe the structure of DNA.
Double helix.
3.
Between the two DNA strands (in an intact double helix), A bonds with T, and C bonds
with G. This is due to hydrogen bonding. A and T form 2 hydrogen bonds, C and G
form 3 hydrogen bonds. This "lock-and-key" model is due to hydrogen bonding and
shape.
4.
Why is dATP one of the four precursors of DNA, but dAMP is not? Need the high
energy triphosphate link for energy.
5.
The synthesis of new DNA from the direction of the original DNA is termed:
(A)
(B)
(C)
(D)
(E)
6.
The human genome consists of approximately 5 x 109 base pairs (each is 0.34 nm).
Therefore, the length of DNA in each cell is:
(A)
(B)
(C)
(D)
(E)
7.
Replication.
Copy.
Xerox.
Mutation.
Doubling.
1.7 nm long.
1.7 miles long.
1.7 m long.
About 0.34 nm long.
from here to Eugene. Get it? Eu-Gene?
How does DNA differ from RNA? One less oxygen (deoxy) and RNA consists of U and
DNA consists of T.
8.
There are four major types of RNA. Give their function.
hnRNA—initial RNA which is the transcript of the chain of DNA.
mRNA—messenger RNA is the result of hnRNA. It is the copy of the code for a single
chain which enters the cytoplasm and interacts with the ribosomes.
rRNA—ribosome RNA is the protein making machine.
tRNA—tranfer RNA transports the needed amino acids into position for polymerization.
9.
The nucleotide sequence of DNA was found to be 5'-G-G-A-T-A-3'. The transcript
strand of RNA is _______________.
3'-U-A-U-C-C-5'.
