Education
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
COLLEGE PARK– COLLEGE PARK,MD
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), 1994
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME), 2005
Professional Experience
SIERRA NEVADA CORPORATION.– CENTENNIAL, COLORADO
Sr. Mechanical Engineer
Oct 2011 to Feb 2012

Mechanical engineer designer responsible for designing a scanner/load master seat for the NSAV Light
program. Produced several designs and drawings using Solidworks to fabricate the seat. Worked with
vendors to obtain quotes for a rapid prototype assembly.

Mechanical engineer responsible for completing the design of the Nose Boom Assembly for the Dream
Chaser ETA spacecraft. Produced assembly, installation and piece part drawings using Solidworks.
SGT INC.– GREENBELT, MD
Sr. Mechanical Engineer
2007 to 2011

Mechanical lead for the ICESAT II mission Lateral Transfer Reflectors (LTR) for the ATLAS instrument.
Duties include designing the LTRs for both the Telescope Alignment Monitoring System (TAMS) and
Laser Transmit LTRS. Worked closely with optical engineers to define the requirements for the LTR
optics.

Mechanical engineering support for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) High Gain Antenna System
(HGAS). Assisted in designing the deployment mechanism for the HGAS hinge. Duties included
balancing and testing the antenna, thermal-vacuum and vibration testing of the HGAS hinge. Developed
assembly and test procedures.

Opto-mechanical engineering support for the International X-ray Observatory. Duties include designing
a vertical metrology assembly for aligning and testing AF45 glass mirrors, performing preliminary design
concepts for the Flight Module Assembly, designing strong back and associated mechanisms for
transferring mirrors from vertical suspension to a portable transfer unit, conceptualizing the Instrument
Platform rotation mechanism for the spacecraft module.

Task Lead for the JWST NIRSpec Detector subsystem. This task required mechanical system engineering
support for the JWST NIRSpec Detector Subsystem (DS) teams in building , troubleshooting, and testing
a flight spare Focal Plane Assembly (FPA). Duties included overseeing the task budget, writing monthly
reports and final task report.

Task Lead for the ASP Mirror Transport Mechanism (MTM). The Absolute Spectrum Polarimeter (ASP)
project required mechanisms engineering support for the design and development of its MTM. This task
required mechanism and control development, mechanical design and structural analysis support. Duties
included overseeing the task budget, writing monthly reports and final task report.

SWALES AEROSPACE – BELTSVILLE, MD
Sr. Mechanical Engineer
2000 to 2007

Mechanical and task lead supporting the 2 Micron Laser Amplifier project. Duties included designing a
conductively cooled 5-sided laser diode pumped amplifier for NASA Langley Research Center. Duties
also included managing a multi-discipline design team and maintaining cost and schedule. Oversaw the
design from concept to completion.

Supported the GM3A project as lead engineer. Responsible for the design of latching deployment hinges
for the solar arrays. Duties also included selecting the optimal solar array drive and slip ring assembly
for mounting to the spacecraft.

Mechanical engineer supporting the ISAT program. Assisted in the design of multi-degree of freedom
deployment hinges and designing the lightweight high-stiffness radar panel array support structure.

Lead engineer supporting the Two Wide-Angle Imaging Neutral Atom Spectrometer (TWINS) Project.
Assisted in the design of the TWINS door latch mechanism. Duties included environmentally testing the
door under vacuum. Developed assembly and testing procedures for both the flight and engineering
test units.

Engineering support for the NPOES/ATMS project. Assisted in the design and assembly of the Bearing
Life Tester (BLT). Facilitated the fabrication and mechanical testing of the BLT. Produced assembly,
vibration and thermal vacuum testing procedures. Unit was operated for seven years under extreme
temperature changes during Life Test.

Supported the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) project as lead engineer. Responsibilities included
overseeing the design of the XRT to meet customer requirements, subassembly and integration and
fabrication of critical test and assembly fixtures.

Designed compact astronaut hand-held nut plate mechanism to grasp and remove failed HST PCU
mounting bracket nut plates with enough force to remove the mounting fastener. The tool was
designed to resist 25 ft-lbs of input torque on the fastener.

Designed fluid connector cap (FCC) sockets to provide a mechanical tool for applying torque exceeding
EVA gloved hand capabilities to FCCs on the International Space Station. The socket was designed to
interface with, capture, lock and rotate on/off the FCCs. Developed assembly and environmental test
procedures for all sockets.

Designed a Neutral Buoyancy Lab version handheld camera/monitor inspection system for Hubble EVA
connector inspection tasks.
METRICVISION – NEWINGTON, VA
Mechanical Engineer
1997 to 2000

Lead Mechanical engineer for the Coherent Laser Radar (CLR) a non-contact 3D measurement system
that performs surface mapping and range measurements with sub-mil accuracy. Responsibilities
included the electro-optomechanical design, assembly and test of all aspects of the CLR. Designed all
mechanical components for the CLR including the beam steering mechanism for the IR laser.

Designed a 3D infrared scanner for limited field of view, 5 m range, 3D measurement using a “nonmoving parts” concept by employing acousto-optic modulators (Bragg cells).
EAGAN MCALLISTER ASSOCIATES – LEXINGTON PARK, MD
