Special Point of the Korean Traditional Musical for this year 2014 NYF
Bibimbab Theatre (Sookyung Hwang, President, graduated AMDA) participated in
the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival since 2010, and finally has a opportunity to
perform at this year’s New York International Fringe Festival. This particular performance is
the result of hard work by UPATA with significant cooperation and collaboration with
KTMDI. The updated 2014 ‘The Princess Pyunggang’ will be performed by actors and
performers from South Korea as well as the US, many of whom have worked with KTMDI
(Korean Traditional Music and Dance Institute) in New York.
This English version of this musical Princess Pyunggang in New York, this year, KTMDI is
join and play some beautiful sounded instruments, as Gayagum and Heagum, and Traditional
Dances added drumming.

From Seoul, this award-winning troupe of multi-talented Korean professional musical theater
“BIBIMBAB” presents a majestic 21stC remix of an ancient Korean folktale unifying
traditional drumming, opera, fan dance and tap to dazzle audiences and inspire endless love
and peaceful transformation.
BIBIMBAB THEATRE PRESENTS
The story of “Princess Pyunggang & General Ondal” is an ancient tale that tells the love story
between a great general and the princess of Goguryo. The princess, defying her father’s
wishes, marries a man mocked as a fool, then transforms him into a strong soldier. This story
combines opera, tap, drumming and dance to deliver a breathtaking performance that wishes
to inspire audiences while exchanging history, presenting a Korean perspective on love.
Bio of Bibimbab Theatre
Bibimbab Theatre was founded in 2007 by Sookyung Hwang as a response to the dynamic
shifts occurring in Korea’s artistic culture. Rearing a new generation of Korean actors,
Bibimbab Theatre is a Korean Traditional Musical Performer-centered movement dedicated
to integrating modern influences while honoring Korea’s rich heritage. Taken from the name
of a popular mixed rice dish in Korean cuisine, Bibimbab Theatre combines parts of
contemporary art and stirs them into traditional theatre, creating new recipes for Korea’s
theatrical canon.
