2011 TONY AWARD FOR BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL
ANYTHING GOES
MAKES ITS ARIZONA PREMIERE AT ASU GAMMAGE, NOVEMBER
Tempe, AZ— ASU Gammage is bringing the national tour of Roundabout Theatre Company’s ANYTHING
GOES, the new Broadway revival of Cole Porter’s timeless classic musical theatre masterpiece, to its
stage, November 13-18. Single tickets are on sale now, visit asugammage.com to purchase.
Broadway actress Rachel York will star as “Reno Sweeney”. Rachel York is best known for her critically
acclaimed Broadway performances in City of Angels, Les Misérables, Victor/Victoria (Drama Desk
Award), The Scarlet Pimpernel, Sly Fox, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She also turned heads on
television with her courageous portrayal of Lucille Ball in the CBS movie, “Lucy.”
Winner of the 2011 Tony Award® for Best Revival of a Musical, Roundabout Theatre Company’s
ANYTHING GOES continues on Broadway under the direction of Kathleen Marshall, who won the 2011
Tony Award® for Best Choreography, at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre following an opening in the
spring of 2011. The New York Times calls it “a zesty new revival with knockout numbers and white-hot
dancing” while the AP exclaims that it’s, “so delightful, so delicious, so de-lovely!”
Roundabout Theatre Company’s ANYTHING GOES features music and lyrics by Cole Porter; original
book by P.G. Wodehouse & Guy Bolton and Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse; and new book by Timothy
Crouse and John Weidman. The creative team includes Bill Elliott (additional orchestrations), Rob Fisher
(musical director) and David Chase (dance arranger). The design team includes Derek McLane (sets),
Martin Pakledinaz (costumes), Peter Kaczorowski (lights) and Brian Ronan (sound).
Cole Porter’s roundup of nostalgic hits in the production include “You’re the Top,” “Friendship,” “I Get a
Kick Out of You,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and, of course “Anything Goes.”
The rewrite of the 1934 musical comedy about the lovers, liars and clowns on a transatlantic cruise is “a
daffy, shipshape romp!” (Variety). When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention
head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love... proving that sometimes
destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned
blackmail.
The New Broadway Cast Recording of Roundabout Theatre Company’s ANYTHING GOES, nominated
for a 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, is available on Ghostlight Records.
The original production of ANYTHING GOES starred Ethel Merman as Reno. The first Broadway revival
of the show was produced by Lincoln Center Theater at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in 1987. Patti
LuPone starred. That version of the production has been revived by Roundabout Theatre Company.
There had been an earlier rewrite of the production that played Off-Broadway’s Orpheum Theatre in
1962, starring Hal Linden and Eileen Rodgers. For 25 years, it was the primary licensable version of the
title, and spawned a cast album (introducing show tune fans to such interpolated oddities as “Heaven
Hop” and “Let’s Step Out”). A 1988 studio recording of the score as it would have been heard opening
night (with original tempos and orchestrations) was released by EMI Classics, with Kim Criswell as Reno
and Frederica Von Stade as Hope. It was under the music direction of the late conductor and music
historian John McGlinn, who added an appendix featuring songs written for but not used in 1934.
