Islam
William J. Morales
What are the origins of Islam?
• Islam means acceptance, surrender, submission, or commitment.
• Muslim means committing yourself to Allah (Muslim God) and
enjoying it.
• Like many religions, someone on earth, in this case Muhammad, was
chosen by the deity, Allah, to be his messenger and spread his word.
• Islam is said to have started when Muhammad, the messenger,
migrated from Mecca to Medina. This journey is called the Hijra.
• Muhammad’s Hijra started on September 24, 622, which is the
beginning of the Muslim calendar.

What are the major tenets of Islamic belief?
• The major tenets in Islam are the 5 pillars.
• The first pillar, Iman (faith), says to only believe in Allah and
Muhammad. And there’s no one else worthy of worship.
• The second pillar, Salah (prayer), is done in prayer five times a day
no matter what you’re doing, nothing is more important than Allah
and Muhammad.
• The third pillar, Zakah, is to help those in need and don’t be
materialized.
• The fourth pillar, Sawm (fasting), is for sacrificing yourself by not
eating from sunrise to sundown for one month.
• The fifth pillar, Hajj (pilgrimage), is going to Mecca at least once in
your life.
