Geometry Lines, segments, rays Grade Level Expectations •Identify and draw segments, rays, and lines that are perpendicular, parallel, and intersecting (G-5-E) •Identify, describe, and draw intersecting, horizontal, vertical, parallel, diagonal, and perpendicular lines, rays, and right angles in the real world (G-5-E) (G-6-E) Big Idea Geometry is everywhere! We realize that different types of lines, line segments, points, and rays do not only exist on paper but in our world. We see geometric figures like road signs, buildings, houses, and other items in our environment. Guiding Questions Can we identify and describe the characteristics of points, lines, segments, and rays? straight path that goes on forever in both directions Parallel Lines lines that never cross, even if they are extended Railroad tracks Intersecting Lines lines that cross at one point Perpendicular Lines lines that form square corners (90’ angles) where they cross Write what each line shows. Parallel lines, intersecting lines, or perpendicular A. B. C. Part of a line with 2 endpoints part of a line having only one endpoint the point at the end of a ray Draw a line to connect the geometry word with it’s real life picture Where 2 roads cross • Line • Parallel lines • Intersecting lines • Perpendicular lines The things that shine from the sun window Q-tips, cotton swabs • Ray Railroad tracks Imagine you are an artist… Draw a line. Don’t forget what your endpoints should look like. Imagine you are an artist… Draw a ray. Don’t forget what your endpoints should look like. Imagine you are an artist… Draw two lines that are parallel. Imagine you are an artist… Draw intersecting lines Imagine you are an artist… Draw perpendicular lines. Great job! Now you are a Geometry Genius! As you can see, we can relate geometry to things around us.
