WHAT ON EARTH IS PROSTATE
CANCER?
ftjfj
WHAT ON EARTH IS THE
PROSTATE?
• Walnut shape
• Located just below
bladder
• Produces liquid that
nourishes and
protects sperm
WHAT ON EARTH IS PROSTATE
CANCER?
• Normally, the cells of the prostate divide in a regulated manner;
in the case of prostate cancer, cells have lost normal control of
growth and division and a mass of tissue, called a tumour, is
formed
• Tumors can be cancerous (malignant), or non-cancerous
(benign); however, these tumors may spread to the rest of your
body
• The cancer cells can damage the tissue around them and can
enter the bloodstream , causing the disease to spread to other
parts of the body, as well as spread beyond the prostate gland to
the bones
I FELL FUNNY…
Difficulty to urinate
Swelling by the urethra
Urinating often/urgent need to urinate
Difficulty in stopping and starting urine flow
Weak, decreased and interrupted urine stream
Blood in the urine and semen
The feeling of the bladder not being completely
empty
Pain when urinating
Pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper
thighs
If cells from a tumour break off and move into
the bloodstream, they can settle in
distant parts of the body and start dividing to
form new tumours (metastasis, forming
metastases). This can cause pain in distant parts
of the body
DOCTOR, DOCTOR, WHAT DO
YOU SAY..???
A number tests can be run to diagnose prostate cancer:
Digital rectal exam (DRE)
A gloved, lubricated finger is inserted into the rectum to feel for any bumps or hard areas on the
prostate that might be cancerous. This can be detected by indicators such as swelling or hardening of
the prostate, or lumps on the surface that may indicate tumours. An issue with this test is that its
accuracy depends on just what the doctor can detect with their hand.
Biopsy
A small tissue sample is taken with a spring loaded needle. A small probe containing an ultrasound
generator and sampling needles (known as Trans Rectal Ultra Sound or TRUS) is inserted in the anus
by the urologist. Ultrasound generates an image of the prostate on a computer screen and guides the
doctor to insert the sampling needles into selected areas of the prostate. Biopsy samples will be
analysed by a pathologist to determine the stage and grade of the cancer
…
Trans-Rectal Ultrasound Scan (TRUS)
Sound waves are used to build up a picture of part of the inside of the body. To scan
the prostate gland, a small probe is passed into the back passage and an image of the
prostate appears on a screen, which is used to measure the size and density of the
prostate.
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Blood Test
If the PSA is less than 10, the cancer is commonly confined to the prostate. If the
PSA is above 30, it is very likely the cancer has spread beyond the prostate and is
therefore less likely to be curable.
WHY GROW A ‘STACHE?
• A big furry caterpillar on your face isn’t very inconspicuous; Movember
sparks conversations about men’s health
• Greater awareness and understanding is generated; “Education is the best
prevention”
• Men will take action to remain well through going to regular check ups and
annual screenings
• Fund-raisers can fund innovative research that builds powerful,
collaborative teams
• • Improved clinical tests and treatments for prostate and testicular cancer
are thus developed
• We improve physical and mental health outcomes for men
