Support for Men with Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is a common disease among men over the age of 50.
According to the Prostate cancer Foundation of Australia about 20,000
men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. One of the common
issues these men report is increasing fatigue and muscle weakness. This
can be from a combination of treatment side effects as well as the
disease process itself.
For the past 4 years there has been a gym based exercise group specific
to men with prostate cancer, available in Mt. Barker. ‘Build Up Blokes’ is
run under the supervision of allied health staff from the Adelaide Hills
Community Health Service 2 mornings a week. The gym program aims to
build muscle strength and reduce the feeling of fatigue that is frequently
reported by men with this disease. Participants have reported feeling
stronger and more energetic. Recent research has established that
resistance and aerobic exercise in men with prostate cancer can achieve
these aims. Coming together also creates an opportunity for men to meet
others with the same diagnosis and to talk informally together about
their experiences.
The Adelaide Hills Prostate Cancer Strength and Well-being Group has
developed from this. It is affiliated with the Prostate Cancer Foundation
of Australia and meets informally once a month on a friday morning at
the Adelaide Hills Community Health Service in Mt. Barker. The aim is to
support men in their prostate cancer survivorship experience. The
meetings include informative speakers and good discussion.
