OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL Department of Social Studies: Modern World History
Course Philosophy
The first priority of this course is to maximize YOUR greatest potential. In addition, we will focus on YOU as
a critical reader, writer, thinker, cultural participant and global citizen. The second priority of this course is to
help you acquire a better understanding of the world in which you live by analyzing where and how people
lived, their cultures, and how they fit in an interdependent, global society. In this regard, our primary focus
will be analyzing historical evidence to draw conclusions and create comparisons between historical periods
and populations. I will be helping you learn these concepts by using Common Core Standards and literacyenriched instruction.
World History Key Understandings
1. What role does cultural diffusion and interdependence play in the development of cultures and
societies?
2. Understand how conflict and innovation influenced political, religious, economic and social changes
in civilizations.
3. Analyze exploration and expansion in terms of their motivations and impact.
4. How have revolutions and rebellions influenced and changed societies and civilizations?
5. How is an understanding of geography crucial to an understanding of history?
6. How have changes in class structure influenced cultures and societies throughout history?

Student Expectations and Responsibilities
-Be present daily and arrive punctually to class.
-Be seated upon entering the room and prepared to
learn.
-Be courteous and respectful to teacher(s) and classmates.
-Pay attention and use class time productively.
-Ask questions!
-Submit homework on time (50% deduction for late
homework, 10% deduction per day late for projects).
-Study for all tests and quizzes.
-Provide detail and thought in written work.
-Participate, be yourself and have fun! 
