By: Ava, Henry, Sam and Julia Digestive System and what it does For our body cells The food you eat changes into nutrients in the digestive system. The Digestion system breaks down food into nutrients witch the body uses for growth, repairs cells and also gives the body energy to move walk and all the other daily activities you do. Nutrients gets absorbed by blood then taken throughout the body. Your digestive system doesn’t just absorb nutrients but it also gets rid of waste in food than removes after everything has been digested and all the nutrients is then removed from the waste. Mouth and Teeth the mouth and teeth is the organ that chews up food and breaks it down through saliva so it will fit through the esophagus. The Esophagus The esophagus is in your throat it has muscles along the side and it pushes the food down to your stomach. The Liver Liver, the livers main function is to process nutrients absorbed from the small intestine. The liver also takes raw material absorbed by the intestine and makes all the various chemicals the body needs to function. The Stomach The stomach mashes the food and the acids turns it to mush. The Gall-Bladder The Gallbladder stores and concentrate bile then releases into duodenum to help absorb and digests fats. It produces bile which helps break down your food so you can digest it. The large intestine The major function of the large intestine is to absorb water from the remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body. Small Instestine The small intestine is made up of three parts Duodenum, Jejunum, and the Ileum. Ileum and the Jejunum have the same function which is to absorb nutrients and place it in the blood stream then on the other hand the duodenum picks up partially digested food. The small intestine is a long muscular tube that breaks down food. Rectum The main function of the rectum is to act as a temporary storage site for fecal matter before it is eliminated from the body through the anal canal. The rectum holds the feces until you push it out of the body, through the anal canal, by having a bowel movement. An adult esophagus ranges from 10 to 14 inches in length, and 1 inch in diameter. 2. We make 1 to 3 pints of saliva a day. 3. It takes your mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, gallbladder, pancreas and liver just to digest a glass of milk.. 4. An adults stomach can hold approximately 1.5 liters of material. 5. The average male will eat about 50 tons of food during his lifetime in order to sustain a weight of 150 pounds. 6. Within the colon, a typical person harbors more than 400 distinct species of bacteria 7. The liver is the largest organ in the body and performs more than 500 functions. 8. The small intestine is a long tube about 1 and a half to 2 inches around, and about 22 feet long. 9. A full grown horses small intestine is 89 feet long. 10. Food stays in your stomach for 2 to 3 hours. diseases The Wilson disease is something that prevents the body from removing extra copper from the body. Copper is absorbed from food and excess excreted through bile. When there is too much in your body it starts going to your brain liver and other vital organs. Eat healthy and drink lots of water. Other systems that work with the digestive system the digestive system breaks down the food and then the excretory system takes all the extra stuff that the body couldn't use and releases it from the body. the respiratory and the digestive systems work together to provide energy to body cells. If the digestive system stopped working the nutrients wouldn’t give energy to your cells so your respiratory system wouldn’t have anything to help get energy to your cells. If the digestive system stopped working there would be no waste to release from the excretory system. sources http://www.news-medical.net/health/What-Does-theLarge-Intestine-Do.aspx The digestive system by Darlene R Stille http://www.answers.com The dynamic digestive system Brain pop www.niddk.nm.gov/health.../health.../digestivedisease/.../default.aspx http://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/disease/hic The structure and function of the digestive system
