The God Who Is Creator Part I
A few years ago Time Magazine claimed,
“Charles Darwin didn’t want to murder God, as he once put it. But he did.”
But the Bible begins with the bold affirmation:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Ge 1:1).
Paul claims that God’s handiwork in creation reveals at least two things about God:
“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and
wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what
can be made known about God is plain to them, because God has made it
plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—
His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Ro 1:18-20).
No one–not even one who has not heard of the Bible or of Christ–has an excuse for not
believing in God and honoring Him as such, because the whole created world reveals Him.
Creation reveals His eternal power and divine nature.
Naturalistic Evolution
The major alternative view to the biblical view is the humanistic view most often called
“evolution” or “macroevolution.” “Microevolution,” on the other hand, refers to variations
within species of animals and plants, which explains why there are more than two hundred
different varieties of dogs, why cows can be bred for improved milk production, and how
bacteria can adapt and develop immunity to antibiotics. Macroevolution, Darwinian evolution,
or naturalistic evolution is an attempt to account for man, as well as all other forms of life,
without taking into account any kind of a supernatural explanation. Immanent processes
within nature have produced man and all else that exists with no involvement by any divine
person, either at the beginning or during the process. Life began millions of years ago with
simple single-cell creatures and then developed through mutation and natural selection into the
vast array of plant and animal life that populate the planet. Human beings came on the scene
from the same common ancestor as the ape. While microevolution acknowledges variations
within species, macroevolution asserts that one species can become another species.
Atoms in motion are all that is needed according to naturalistic evolution. This means
that creation is the result of a combination of atoms, motion, time, and chance somehow
working together. At the higher levels or later stages of the process, "natural selection" is at
work which means nature is extremely prolific since it produces many more offspring of any
given species than can possibly survive. Competition comes into play because of a shortage of
2
the necessities of life. Therefore only the best and the strongest and the most adaptive survive.
The others die out. As a result, there is a gradual upgrading of the species. According to this
evolutionary theory mutations also occur. These are sudden variations or novel features which
did not appear in the earlier generations of a species. Of the many mutations which occur, most
are useless, even detrimental, but a few are helpful as these species compete and struggle to
survive.
Man is the end product of a long process of natural selection and useful mutations. He is
an organism of great complexity and superior abilities, not because someone planned and made
him that way, but because the features enabled him to survive. Thus he proved to be the fittest to
survive (“the survival of the fittest”), or so the hypothesis goes. Unfortunately for the
evolutionist, since mutations always destroy existing genetic information and never add
information it is hard to imagine how a genetic “overhaul” could occur to change one species
into a new species.
Eight Basic Assumptions of Evolution
There are eight basic assumptions that are often not mentioned during discussions of
evolution. Four of these assumptions are:
1. That nonliving things gave rise to living material, i.e., that spontaneous generation
occurred.
2. That spontaneous generation occurred only once.
3. That viruses, bacteria, plants, and animals are all interrelated.
4. That the protozoa gave rise to the metazoan.
5. That the various invertebrate phyla are interrelated.
6. That the invertebrates gave rise to the vertebrates.
7. That the vertebrates and fish gave rise to the amphibian, the amphibian to the reptiles,
and the reptiles to the birds and mammals. Sometimes this is expressed in other words,
i.e., that the modern amphibian and reptiles had a common ancestral stock and so on.
8. That impersonal things gave rise to personal beings.
The problem with the first seven assumptions is that by their nature they are not
capable of experimental verification. They take for granted that a certain series of events has
occurred in the past. Though it may be possible to mimic some of these events under present day
conditions, this does not mean that these events must therefore have taken place in the past. All
this shows is that it is possible for such a change to take place. Therefore, to change a presentday reptile into a mammal, though of great interest, would not show the way in which the
mammals did arise. Unfortunately, we cannot bring about even this change; instead we have to
depend upon limited circumstantial evidence for our assumptions. All attempts to form life from
nonlife in the laboratory have failed. Even if life were formed in the laboratory by sophisticated
means, it would only serve to prove that intervention by an intelligent designer (in this case,
man) was needed to form life! And the eighth assumption is absurd since it fails to provide any
semblance of evidence.
3
Evolution then is a theory buttressed only by very limited evidence. Broad inferences and
assumptions are made from this limited evidence. Evolution is really based on educated men
making educated guesses!
