1. How long ago was the Parthenon constructed?
2. The Parthenon has been under reconstruction for over 30 years, at a cost so far of over
100 million dollars. How many years did it take the ancient Athenians to build it?
3. What is the name of the embankment on which the Parthenon stands, and that includes
other buildings?
4. What statue was housed in the Parthenon, and of what materials was it constructed?
5. What does the ancient Greek term parthenos mean?
6. The Parthenon is constructed mostly of what stone?
7. Please provide a definition for the following architectural terms: capital, drum, stylobate,
and architrave?
8. With reference to the terms in question 7, explain “refinements” to the Parthenon that
create the optical illusion of perfect rectilinearity. In your answer, please include a
definition for the term “entasis” and explain how it applies to the columns of the
