CURIOUS INCIDENT DOES THE MATHS
Maths is being brought to life for teenagers in a series of lecture shows on 25, 29 and 30
November 2016 at London’s Gielgud Theatre, using the set of The National Theatre’s
award-winning production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time adapted by
Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon’s best-selling book.
The shows are being produced by Maths Inspiration, who run maths lecture shows for 14-17
year olds across the country.
The interactive and entertaining maths shows are entitled The Curious Coincidence of Maths
in the Day-Time, and will explore some of the many maths ideas that are touched on in Mark
Haddon’s best-selling book. The shows will also explain some of the maths that was used to
design the set and compose the music of the award-winning West End show.
The Curious Coincidence shows will feature four of the UK’s top maths presenters, the
BBC’s Dr Hannah Fry; stand-up mathematician Matt Parker; maths-musician Ben Sparks
and the Director of Maths Inspiration Rob Eastaway.
“Rob Eastaway commented: “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is
now a set text on the GCSE English Literature syllabus. The book and the play are
also full of maths, so this is a perfect opportunity to make connections between
English, Maths and Drama, and to give teenagers new insights into the book, as well
as revealing some beautiful aspects of mathematics that they may never have
encountered before.”
Actors Joseph Ayre and Thomas Dennis, who are currently playing the central
role of Christopher Boone in the Gielgud production of the play, will also be
appearing in the Curious Coincidence maths shows.
Bunny Christie, who designed the set for the Curious Incident said: “When it
comes to design and theatre and film production, the UK is a world leader.
Teenagers are often unaware that this creative profession is actually highly
dependent on maths and other technical skills. This maths show is a perfect way to
introduce them to this essential aspect of theatre.”
There are shows for 15-17 year olds on 25th November, and for 13-15 year olds on
29th and 30th November. More information on the shows, including booking details,
can be found at www.MathsInspiration.com
