7th Grade Math Syllabus
Text: Holt Mathematics Course 2.
Description: This course is based on the premise that math skills are highly sequential and
the development and reinforcement of skills is essential for success at the next level. We
start working on essential arithmetic skills and progress into algebraic and geometric
concepts.
Goals:
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
o Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and
mathematical problems.
The Number System
o Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add,
subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.
Expressions and Equations
o Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
o Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic
expressions and equations.
Geometry
o Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the
relationships between them.
o Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area,
surface area, and volume.
Statistics and Probability
o Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.
o Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.
o Investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability
models.
Mathematical Practices
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Student Performance Outcomes:
1. Students will be expected to take notes. No notebook brought to class = tardy!
2. Students are expected to complete daily assignments. 3 missing assignments
results in lunch detention.
3. Make-up work is the students’ responsibility to get and complete.
4. Students will be expected to successfully complete quizzes and test for
each chapter covered.
5. Students will work in cooperative groups from time to time.
Evaluation: Students grades will be calculated by using a percent of each grade in each of
three categories. The categories and percents are:
40% Tests
40% Class Assignments
20% Quizzes
Grading Scale: The following scale will be used:
93-100 A
90-92 A87-89 B+
83-86 B
80-82 B77-79 C+
73-76 C
70-72 C67-69 D+
63-66 D
60-62 D0-59 F
Delivery of Instruction: The classroom is set up so the desks are in pairs. This allows
the students to have a work partner when they are working in class. The material is
presented primarily through lecture. During the instruction part of the class the students
will be required to take notes and work out example problems. We will do some
cooperative group work in class. The students are expected to be active participants in
both the instruction part of class as well as group work.
Classroom Expectations:
1. Be RESPECTFUL!!!
2. Be in your seat and ready to go when class starts. This means notebook open
and pencil sharpened.
3. You must raise your hand to leave your seat for anything unless instructed by
teacher.
4. All notes and assignments are to be completed in pencil.
5. All tests and quizzes are to be done in pencil.
6. Make-up work is your responsibility, ask the teacher what you missed.
7. Late work is accepted but receives a maximum score of 75%. Late work will be
accepted right up to before the last week of the marking period.


Survival Kit:
Students will be required to keep all notes in a three-ring binder.
Students will need notebook paper.
PENCILS – I strongly recommend you purchase a mechanical pencil and lead refills.
ERASERS – Pencil top or large Pencil eraser.
Mini Pencil Sharpener – To allow you to sharpen them right away.
Colored Pencils – Are highly recommended for your notes and assignments. There
is a classroom set of colored pencils if you don’t bring your own.
 If you choose to purchase a calculator. A graphing calculator would be best. I
would recommend you purchase a TI-83 or TI-83 Plus. This is what is
recommended for high school use as well.
