Prepositions Notes Preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun, pronoun or some other word in a sentence. o Andy kicked the ball into the net. ‘net’ is saying where the ‘ball’ was kicked. Prepositions answer the question (?) where, when, to whom, etc…. Remember….ASK YOURSELF ?’s !!!!!! A prepositional phrase is made up of the: preposition, its’ object & any other modifiers. o I went to the football game. The prepositional phrase is: to the football game. Answers the (?) where ‘I went’. The object of a preposition is the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition. o I went to the football game. ‘to’ is the preposition and ‘game’ is the object. There can be more than one object in a prepositional phrase. o Eva sat between Cal and Harry. Cal, Harry are both the objects of the prep. phrase. Answers the (?) where ‘Eva sat’. Adjective Phrases Adjectives describe nouns or pronouns. Right?? (you know that ) An adjective phrase is a prepositional phrase that describes nouns & pronouns. o They can answer the (?) what kind or which one. The door to the building is locked. to the building is answering the (?) ‘which’ door. HINT: adjective phrases come AFTER the words they modify (noun or pronoun etc.) The lion in the wild ran away. o in the wild comes after lion. The dogs down the street were barking. o down the street comes after dogs. ************************************************************* Adverb Phrases Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. An adverb phrase is a prepositional phrase that tell how, where, or when. o Sue ran toward the lake. (says where she ran (verb) ) o Ted was eager for the race. (modifies eager (adjective) ) o Melanie swims early in the morning. ( says when she swims (verb) )
