The coasts of Europe and Africa, Iceland
and the fictional islands of the Atlantic
Ocean are depicted as typical of the period.
‘Stilant’ and ‘Estotilant’, however, are
unusual and very rare. These were
introduced in cartography by Nicolo Zeno
of Venice (1558), who had fabricated
evidence ‘proving’ that his ancestors,
Nicolo and Antonio Zeno had landed on
North America a century before Columbus.
Presenting the improving picture of the New World of the second half of the 16th century: Baja California on a NW/SE axis; Yucatan as a peninsula
rather than an island; Cuba and the Caribbean islands placed at correct latitudes. The east/west dimension of North America is significantly
exaggerated. Mexico City is shown on its lake.

The most notable features of this chart are the two main river systems painted in blue and their island-filled estuaries: the Amazon and the Rio del
Plata with a large tributary flowing down from northern Brazil. Two large armorial devices present the coat of arms of Spain in Peru and those of
Portugal in Brazil.

The cartography of this southern part of South America is consistent with the typical cartography of the second half of the 16th century. The Rio del
Plata river system is quite prominent. Most of the nomenclature on this chart is in Italian, indicating the original atlas was produced in Italy.

With the royal coat-of-arms of Portugal in Brazil and South Africa, and a Portuguese flag in present day Nigeria. Vignettes represent two Portuguese
establishments: Torre de Mina in Guinea, including a large tower, a house and two palm trees, and a vignette at 9° S. Near the river Congo, an
important mission post is indicated by a large cross and church.
