Trousdale County Schools Focused Lesson Plan 201516 Teacher: Chelsea Rittenberry Unit Name: Egypt Unit #: 3 Unit Length: 3 weeks Week: 6 Week _ _2__ _ of __ _3__ _ Subject: 6th grade social studies Tennessee State Standard(s) to be taught: ● *6.15 On a historical map locate the Mediterranean and Red Seas, the Nile River and Delta, and the areas of ancient Nubia and Egypt. Identify the locations of ancient Upper and Lower Egypt and explain what the terms mean. On a modern map, identify the modern countries of Egypt and Sudan. ● *6.16 Investigate the kinds of evidence used by archaeologists and historians to draw conclusions about the social and economic characteristics of Ancient Nubia ( the Kingdom of Kush) and their relationship to the social and economic characteristics of Ancient Egypt. ● 6.17 Develop a visual representation of the structure of Egyptian society including the role of the pharaoh as god/king, the concept of dynasties, the importance of at least one Egyptian ruler, the relationship of pharaohs to peasants, and the role of slaves in ancient Egypt. ● 6.18 Cite evidence from the informational texts to explain the polytheistic religion of ancient Egypt with respect to beliefs about death, the afterlife, mummification, and the roles of different deities. *Some classes have to finish up standard 6.15 and 6.16 before they can do 6.17 and 6.18. Complete the map and writing activity for 6.15 and 6.16 (located in 83115 Weekly Plan). 2. Hand out Menes reading. 3. As a class, we will discuss the uniting of Upper and Lower Egypt and the importance of Menes. 4. Hand out lesson 6.17 reading. 5. In groups, the student will read the article. 6. As a class, we will discuss the hierarchy in Egyptian society. 7. Hand out hierarchy pyramid sheet. 8. As a class, we will fill in the social pyramid, including descriptions for each layer. 9. On the back of the pyramid, the students will answer the following questions: According to the text, what was the relationship between the pharaoh and the peasants? Bellringer Standard 6.18 Writing Activity Egyptian Interactive Website 1. Hand out “Ancient Egyptian Religion” page. 2. In groups, the student will read the article. 3. As a class, we will discuss the vocabulary and meanings behind ancient Egyptian religion. 4. Individually, students will answer the following prompt: Describe Egyptian religion including their belief about death, the afterlife, and mummification. Cite evidence from your text. 5. Students will get out their chromebooks and go to the following website: http://www.childrensuniversity.manch ester.ac.uk/interactives/history/egypt/ 6. On this website, I will have students click on “explore ancient Egypt”, “Giza Pyramid”, “Writing in Hieroglyphics”, and “Making a Mummy.” 7. Exit ticket: 3-2-1 a.
