Key Terms
 Jihad – the inner struggle that people experience
when they try to obey God and live according to
Muslim beliefs.
 Sunnah – A book about Muhammad’s life. It gives
examples of how people should behave and the kind
of life they should live.
 Shariah – Islamic laws based on the Qur’an and the
Sunnah.
 Hajj – a pilgrimage to Mecca.
The Qur’an
 A collection of
Muhammad’s teachings.
 The Holy book of Islam.
Beliefs
 There is only one God – Allah – and Muhammad is his
prophet.
 Obey Allah’s commands and you will be rewarded by life in
paradise.
Guidelines for Behavior
 Preparing for worship – wash
before praying so you are pure
before Allah; don’t drink alcohol or
eat foods like pork.
 The Qur’an encouraged people to
free their slaves, and gave rights to
women like the right to own
property, earn money and get an
education.
Questions

The Sunnah
 Based on the hadith, which is a
written record of Muhammad’s
words and actions.
 Lists the Five Pillars of Islam,
which are five acts of worship
required by all Muslims.
 Teaches that everyone should be
treated fairly and generously.
Don’t cheat others, owe money,
or disobey leaders.

The Five Pillars of Islam
 1. Statement of Faith – “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is




his prophet.”
2. Pray five times a day. A call or signal comes from the mosque to
signal prayer time.
3.Yearly donation to charity to help the poor, build mosques or pay
debts.
4. Fasting: going without food or drink from sun up to sun down
during the holy month of Ramadan.
5. Hajj – All Muslims must travel to Mecca at least once in their lives.

Shariah
 The Qur’an and Sunnah are the basis




of Shariah (Islamic Law).
Sets rewards for good behavior and
punishments for crimes.
Is based on religious beliefs.
Not found in one book, and changes
over time.
Is different in each Muslim country.

Five Pillars of Islam Activity
 Using the paper given to you –
 1. Write the title of the assignment and your name in
the first square.
 2. In each of the remaining five squares write the
five pillars and draw a picture to represent that
pillar.
