Akhirah
Everlasting life after death
Allah
The Arabic name for God
Angels
Spiritual beings believed to act as messengers of
God. Jibril (Gabriel) and Mika’ill (Michael) are two
examples of Archangels.
Caliph
A person considered to be a political and religious
successor to the prophet Muhammad and the leader
of the Sunni Muslim community.

Day of
Judgement
A time when the world will end and every soul will
be judged by God and either rewarded or punished.
Hadith
Sayings of the prophets, including Muhammad.
Haram
Word used for anything that is forbidden by God
Immanent
The idea that God is present in and involved with life
on earth and in the universe, a quality of God.
Justice
The idea that God is just and fair and judges human
actions rewarding the good and punishing the bad.
In Shi’a Islam, this is known as Adalat.
Mercy
This is one of the qualities of Allah: this shows that
Allah is compassionate and shows forgiveness to
humans, even though he has the power to punish
them.
Monotheistic
Belief in one God
Muhammad
The final Prophet of God in Islam
Predestination
Allah knows what will happen in life and this has
already been written down by Allah (Qadar).
Qur’an
The holy book revealed to Muhammad by the angel
Jibril; God’s final revelation to humankind.
Risalah
The belief that the prophets are an important
channel of communication between God and
humans.
Shahadah
The muslim declaration of faith.
Shari’ah Law
Islamic law based on the Qur’an, Haddith and
Sunnah.
Shi’a
Muslims who believe that Ali ibn Abi Talib was the
divinely appointed leader of Islam after Muhammad
died.
Sunnah
The teachings and deeds of Muhammad.
Sunni
Muslims who believe that Abu Bakr, who was
elected by the people, was the rightful leader of
Islam after Muhammad died.

Chapters of the Qur’an.
Tawhid
The Oneness and unity of God
The five roots of Main beliefs Shi’a Islam: Prophethood, the justice of
Usal ad-Din
God, Tawhid, The Imamate, Resurrection.
The Imamate
In Shi’a Islam: The divine appointment of the Imam.
There has been 12 Imams in total and they are
waiting for the next Imam to be revealed. They will
return with Jesus to bring equality and justice.
The six articles
of faith
Main beliefs in Sunni Islam: Angels, Tawhid,
Authority of the holy books, the prophets of God, the
supremacy of God’s will, Day of Judgement
Transcendent
The idea that God is beyond and outside life on
earth and the universe; a quality of God.
