diRTy Private sharing, Contact Theatre, Manchester, Jan 30th, 2013. TransAction Theatre presents Written and performed by Joey Hateley Directed by Julie McNamara ‘Take the dream out of your head, put it beneath your feet and don’t look down’ ABOUT THE SHOW diRTy is a cutting-edge theatrical journey to redemption through some of the darkest nights of the soul – an explosive, visceral portrayal of disintegration. Will we remain trapped by the chains that bind us or can we lead each other toward the light? diRTy is a beautiful waste; a multi-media perverted psycho-drama and visionary extravaganza. This performance is a raw depiction of the taboos and excesses of humanity and a unique piece of trans-feminist theatre that asks: ‘Where would you draw the line?’ Joey Hateley, writer and performer says: "diRTy is a life-long challenge to share the deepest parts of my psyche. I am asking what fears and forces drive and inspire any of us? What experiences and choices shape the core of who we are? I'm exploring a sexual language that moves beyond binary boxes of gender, and the singular notion of Identity. It is the most honest, exciting and terrifying thing I have ever done". Julie McNamara, director says: "Joey Hateley's new work is profoundly unsettling, raw and vulnerable. Born of obsessions, craving, nightmare and desire diRTy picks open wounds, clawing a careful pathway to redemption through the lens of a fragmented self. Where there is gross injustice, the soul flees a while. It's my role as Director to coax us back, from darkness into light." diRTy is supported by diRTy Private sharing, Contact Theatre, Manchester, Jan 30th, 2013. "Joey Hateley is a highly skilled performer. An androgynous appearance adds magic to ‘herms’ performances in which transformations unfold layer upon layer of gender constructions. Is he a he? Is she a he? Is he a she? Is she a she? Joey interferes with our assumptions and speculations, leaving the audience unsettled, entertained and curious." Diane Torr, (2010) co-author Sex, Drag and Male Roles; Investigating Gender as Performance. University of Michigan Press). “Continuing to press the personal into political service using performance as a consciousness raising tool, Hateley mixes the factual with the fictional in making explicit the impact of discourse on the bodies, lives and identities we inhabit”.
