Name:
Milky Way Plate Tectonics
Safety and precautions:
*CLEAN UP after yourself
* You only get 1 Milky Way bar, so use it wisely.
*Eat your bar only when instructed to do so.
The Milky Way bar will be a model of the Earth’s Interior today
EARTH’S LAYERS
MANTLE – flexible, gooey, hot
CRUST or LITHOSPHERE – thin, brittle, hard, cold, solid outer shell
INNER CORE – hot, solid (very high pressure, contains heavy metals)
OUTER CORE – so hot, even pressure can’t force it into a solid. This layer is a liquid
Cut the Milky Way bar in half:
Label the three layers of the bar according to which layer you think is the mantle,
crust, inner core, or outer core.
NOTE: Nougat: solid, not very flexible
Label the layers of the Earth using the terms above and relating it to the Milky Way model:
QUESTION 1: Fill out the table below

QUESTION 2: If the Earth were a Milky Way bar, what layer would the Earth’s ‘plates’ be
found?
QUESTION 3: Which layer of the Earth is missing from the Milky Way model?
