Welcome! Colon Health, it’s not just about Cancer. Philip N Styne, MD AGAF Medical Director Digestive Health Center The colon is the last segment of the intestine Main function of the colon is to reabsorb water which has been added to food to help with digestion and absorption. Affect of diet on colon: Most food has been digested and absorbed by the time it reaches the colon. Fiber and some foods that can’t be absorbed or aren’t by their nature will reach the colon. Examples of foods that cannot be absorbed are sugars that are specifically made to not be absorbed and lactose in those who are lactose intolerant. FODMAP foods may be something to consider FODMAP foods may be something to consider Fiber is the non-digestible part of vegetables and grains. • The colon as with the other portions of the GI tract has specific patterns of movement example; gastro-colic reflex. • Understanding these movements may aid in maintaining colonic health. • Normal patterns of movement may be disrupted by inflammation and irritable bowel syndrome Common diseases of the colon: •Diverticulosis •Diverticulitis Common diseases of the colon: • Irritable bowel syndrome: gas, bloating, pain, diarrhea, constipation • Colitis-acute, infectious traveler's diarrhea, food borne diarrhea, antibiotic associated diarrhea, viral gastroenteritis - Chronic, ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis, post surgical Common diseases of the colon: • Hemorrhoids • Constipation functional vs. structural • Diarrhea small vs. large bowel Colorectal Cancer • The third most common cancer in men and women. • The second most common cause of cancer death overall.
