Three Religions – Lots in Common
all started in the Middle East
 all believe in only ONE god – this is
monotheism
 all were first led by a single person and
have a set of sacred writings
 all trace their roots to Abraham

2000(ish) B.C.
Judaism begins
 Abraham is told
by God to move
from Ur,
Mesopotamia, to
Canaan. He does.
His descendants
are known as
Jews.

The Jewish Holy book
is called the Torah.
586 B.C.



Babylonians
destroy the
Jewish temple
The Jews are
exiled to Babylon
Exile – to be
forcibly removed
The first temple was built by
King Solomon, famous for his
wisdom.
536ish B.C.
The Jews
return to
Canaan
 The temple is
rebuilt

The second temple lasted almost 600 years.
8-4 B.C.

A Jewish boy
named Jesus is
born in
Bethlehem
The story of Jesus is told in the four gospels in
the Christian Bible.
Early 30s A.D.

Jesus travels
around Palestine,
preaching love
and forgiveness
of sins and
performing
miracles.
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.‘ But I tell you, Do not resist an evil
person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to
sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go
with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to
borrow from you.
33 A.D.
Jesus is and arrested
and killed because of
his message.
 According to his
disciples (followers),
he was raised from
the dead.
 This started the
religion of
Christianity.

Christ is Greek for messiah, or
savior.
66 A.D.


Jews revolt
against Roman
rulers
The Second
temple is
destroyed and
the Jews and
Christians
spread through
the world.
The temple still hasn’t been rebuilt – but
Judaism didn’t die. Jews still worship through
prayer, study, and good deeds.

Muhammad is
born in Mecca.


 He started the
religion of Islam.
 Followers are
called Muslims.

Muslims believe that
Muhammad was the final
prophet of God.
