These states were pro slavery! They did not believe in secession! Union Composed of states who chose not to secede from the United States. Confederate Composed of states who thought they had the freedom to secede whenever they felt necessary. http://www.events-inmusic.com/images/civil_war_flags_sm. jpg President Abraham Lincoln President Jefferson Davis It was the beginning of the civil war It started April 12,1861 General Beauregard led the confederate attack on fort Sumter. Casualties: None Fort Sumter http://karenswhimsy.com/public-domain-images/civil-warbattles/images/civil-war-battles-6.jpg Union general was Irvin Mc dowel The union hoped to advance and capture Richmond, the confederate capital. Casualties:1982 Bull run http://civilwar.olemarius.net/images/picks/Battle%20of%20Bull%20Run-July%2021st%201861-500.jpg Both sides started to realize the impacts of the war! Union General George Meade led 93,921 troops to fend of confederate troops invading north. Confederate General Robert E. lee led 71,699 Confederate troops north to Philadelphia destroying any union troops along the way. Day 1: confederate troops sent union troops running. Day 2: Despite heavy attacks, union troops held their line. Day3: 12,500 confederate troops charged union troops on cemetery ridge. Union casualties:23,055 Union troops held them off with tremendous rifle and artillery fire. Confederate casualties: 23,231 The Battle of Gettysburg http://heartlandtrails.com/BLOG_images/gettysburg.jpg If the union took control they would cut off the last port for confederate supplies. Union Generals: Major General Alfred Terry commanded 9,000 troops. Rear Admiral David D. Porten. Commanded 60 ships. Confederates HAD to defend the fort if they were overtaken their last port would be blockaded and they would have no way of getting supplies. Confederate Generals: Major General W.H.C. Whitting commanded 1,900 troops at the Fort. Confederates Generals (Continued) Robert F. Hoke Commanded 6,400 just north of the Fort. General Terry landed his troops in between Hoke’s troops and Fort Fisher. Hoke did not engage in battle-a mistake he would regret. For two days porters Ships attacked the Fort with heavy artillery. Then, the naval attack stopped and gave way to a land battle. Fierce Combat resulted in the death of General Whitting. At 10:00 the surrender order was given by the confederates. Terms of confederate surrender were: Major artillery owned by confederates would be turned over to the union. Side arms and animals remained in the possession of their owners. There would be no charges held against the confederates for treason against the nation. The civil war helped to end slavery in the united states. It unified our nation, states can no longer succeed when they feel necessary!
