How does the digestive system maintain homeostasis? Organs and functions of the digestive system • MouthMechanical digestion- Teeth grind food. Chemical digestion- saliva breaks down food. • Esophagus- Muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. • Stomach Mechanical digestion- churning motion Chemical digestion- chemicals and acid breaks down and digest protein in food. Organs and functions of the digestive system • Small intestine- Most of the chemical digestion and absorption (villi) occurs. • Large Intestine-Water is absorbed and waste is discarded. • Liver- Produces bile • Gallbladder- Stores bile and releases it into the small intestine. • Pancreas- Produces enzymes and releases them into the small intestine.
