2012 Summary of Cancer-related Community Outreach Activities Cancer-related community outreach is a vital part of the Comprehensive Cancer Program at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Cancer screening programs apply screening guidelines to detect cancers at an early stage, which improves the likelihood of increased survival and decreased morbidity. Cancer prevention programs identify risk factors and use strategies to modify attitudes and behaviors to reduce the chance of developing cancer. Both types of outreach programs are intended to help the members of our community maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many of our programs have been developed based on identified needs within the Greater Brockton area. Some programs are developed in response to specific requests from our numerous community partners. Two primary focus areas for our screening and prevention efforts are breast cancer and prostate cancer, which have been identified as significant health issues for the Greater Brockton Community Health Network Area (CHNA). For breast cancer, “race/ethnicity disparities…exist for this health issue: the death rate from invasive breast cancer bordered upon being significantly higher in non-Hispanic Black female residents of Brockton (47.5 per 100,000) than in non-Hispanic White female residents of Brockton (21.4 per 100,000) from 2004-2008. While the rate of new cases of invasive breast cancer was significantly lower in Brockton than in the state, the mortality rate from invasive breast cancer in Brockton during the same time period (26.5 per 100,000) was similar to the state (22.9 per 100,000)† For prostate cancer, “the age-adjusted rate…was lower in men both in the city of Brockton and other CHNA towns from 2003-2007. The rate of invasive prostate cancer in non-Hispanic Black men in the city of Brockton, however, was significantly higher (277 per 100,000) than the rate in non-Hispanic White men in the city (98.6 per 100,000) in the same time period† The following graphs illustrate the cancer incidence in women and men during the period 2003-2007:† Cancer Incidence, Women, 2003-2007 (age-adjusted rate per 100,000) Cancer Incidence, Men, 2003-2007 (age-adjusted rate per 100,000) 1 of 4 *significantly higher than state **significantly lower than the stat In addition to breast and prostate cancer, we continue to provide education to the community on the need for prevention and early detection of other types of cancer. Our annual free skin cancer screening is supplemented by numerous educational activities that are intended to increase awareness about that topic. We have also developed an educational program on colorectal cancer, which has a higher incidence rate in women in the Greater Brockton area than in the state as illustrated in the graph above. Interestingly, “approximately the same percentage of CHNA residents age 50 and older reported that they had received a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy in the past five years (61%) as residents of the state overall (64%).” † Our outreach efforts are intended to ensure that our community members continue to understand the importance of complying with nationally recognized colorectal screening guidelines. † Reference: Community Health Needs Assessment for the Greater Brockton CHNA.
