Lab 10 Animal Physiology Quiz
1. (1pt) What blood vessels carry blood away from the heart?
Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
2. (1pt) What is happening in the heart during the P wave on the EKG?
The atria are contracting during the p wave.
3. (1pt) What is happening during the QRS complex of an EKG?
The ventricles are contracting during the QRS complex.
4. (1pt) List two things that affect the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin.
Two things that affect the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin are
• the partial pressure of O2
• and pH
5. (2pt) Which of the 4 chambers of the heart has the thickest muscular walls? Why?
The ventricles have thicker muscular walls than atria, because they pump blood
out of the heart. The walls of the left ventricle are ticker than the walls of the
right ventricle because it has to pump blood through out the body, while the right
ventricle only has to pump blood to the lungs.
6. (1pt) Are skeletal muscles abel to transmit electrical impulses?
Skeletal muscles are not able to transmit electrical impulses. Cardiac muscles are
abel to transmit electrical impulses.
7. (1pt) Why is it necessary for a multi-chambered heart to have valves?
A multi-chambered hear must have valves in order to prevent blood from flowing
back into the chamber from which the blood was pumped.
8. (1pt) Which chamber of the heart pumps blood to the lungs?
The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs.
9. (1pt) Mammals and birds have 4 chambered hearts, while amphibians have a 3
chambered heart. Why is a 4 chambered heart more efficient?
In a three chambered heart, oxygenated and deoxygenated blood is mixed within
the heart. In a four chambered heart oxygenated blood is kept separate from deoxygenated blood, so blood that is richer in oxygen is circulated to the body.
