PhD PROGRAMME IN MOLECULAR AND TRANSLATIONAL ONCOLOGY AND INNOVATIVE MEDICAL-SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIES Required degree The programme offers a 3-year PhD course with 12 fellowships per year, and is open to applicants holding a 5-year degree (BSc + MSc or equivalent degree) in biological or pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, engineering/informatics, as well as to MDs, with a strong commitment to translational cancer research. Learning outcomes Aim of this programme is to provide the trainees with a strong and interdisciplinary expertise in diverse aspects of cancer biology and basic and translational cancer research. The programme Faculty comprises qualified Italian and international experts in various basic and clinical cancer-related areas, bio-medical engineering, nanotechnologies and systems biology. The programme is articulated in four curricula: Molecular oncology; Biomedical engineering, systems biology and applied nanotechnologies; Translational medical oncology; Innovative technologies and therapies in urology and gynecology. Main areas of scientific interests include: Aberrant signalling in cancer – biochemical and molecular aspects, targeted therapy; Application of high-throughput approaches for the definition of the genonic, epigenomic, proteomic and metabolic landscape of haematopoietic and solid malignancies; Generation of in vitro, ex-vivo and in vivo models for the study of tumourigenesis and for the discovery and validation of new therapeutic agents; Stem cell and cancer stem cell biology; microRNA in cancer development and progression; Systems biology in cancer research; Advanced methods of bio- and molecular imaging; Innovative diagnostics and tailored therapeutics in clinical oncology; Design of innovative nanotechnology-based bio-medical devices; Innovative approaches in uro-genital oncological surgery and preservation of fertility in cancer patients. Job placement opportunities Academia, biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies, national health system, national and international research institutions. Additional information This programme, together with the other bio-medical PhD programmes of the University Magna Græcia, is part of the PhD School “Life Science and Technologies” that co-ordinates their educational activities and initiatives.
