What is the Doppler shift? The Universe and Big Bang Theory Review Sheet 1. What is background radiation? -If there was a Big Bang theory, energy that was created during the explosions, should still be seen in all parts of the universe. 2. What evidence is found to support the big bang theory? -Evidence is found in the form of long wavelength background radiation (microwaves) found in all parts of the universe. 3. What is the Red Shift Doppler effect? - all elements in the universe emit electromagnetic energy in certain wavelengths. 4. What end of the spectrum is the light from stars in almost in all galaxies? - The light of the stars are shifted to the RED end of the spectrum (Red Shift). 5. What does the red shift suggest? - It suggests the universe is expanding. 6. The farther the galaxy is from earth, the greater the red shift. 7. From where do stars originate from? -from clouds of gas and dust clouds. 8. How does gravity play a role in the forming of stars? - gravity causes the gas and dust clouds to clump up, forming larger balls of gas and dust molecules. 9. A star is born how? (step 3 in Star Origin notes) -When the mass becomes slightly larger than Jupiter, the gravitational contraction causes enough high temp and high pressure to start Nuclear Fusion. 10. Define the Universe. -everything that exists everywhere. All the space, matter and energy in existence. 11. Define Big Band Theory. -Widely accepted theory that explains how the universe began. In the beginning, the entire universe was confined to a dense, hot, super massive ball. Then about 13.7 billion years ago a gigantic explosion occurred, hurling this material in all directions. The universe began to expand and cool. After millions of years of more cooling matter clumped together to form the stars and then galazies. It is continuing to expand. 12. Define light year. - the distance that light can travel in one year. 13. What is astronomical unit? - the average distance between the earth and the sun. 14. What are the three major types of galaxies? What do they have in common? -Spiral, elliptical and irregular. 15. What galaxy do we live in? - The Milky Way Galaxy- spiral shaped. 16. What is the Doppler shift?
