Chapter 7 Living and Non-living Very Short answer questions: 1. All living things move and all non-living things do not move .True or false? False. 2. Which of these grow through their life-plants or animals? Plants. 3. What is the process of removal of waste products from the body called? Excretion. 4.When oxygen and food combine in the bodies of living organisms they produce------------Energy. 5.Name a one-celled organism Amoeba, paramecium or bacteria. 6. If one living organism can reproduce with another, they belong to the same-----Species. 7.Members of different species can reproduce among themselves. True or false? False. SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS: 1.Why do animals move around? Animals move around in search of food or shelter or to escape from enemies. 2. Give an example of movement in plants. The Sunflower moves as it turns to face the sun. 3.What are cells? Are all living things made up of cells? Cells are the structural unit of living thing. Yes, all living things are made up of cells. 4. Give an example of a stimulus and a response. The leaves of the Mimosa plant droop if we touch it .Touch is a stimulus while folding of the leaves is the response. 5. How are autotrophs different from heterotrophs? Autotrophs make their own food themselves.eg: Green Plants. Heterotrophs depend on others for their food. eg: animals. 6 . All living things take in oxygen. What functions does oxygen perform in the body? Oxygen is the primary need of all organisms. Living organisms respire all the time. The oxygen breathed in combines with the digested food and produces energy .We need energy to stay alive. 7. Name three waste products that we excrete. Urine, sweat and carbon dioxide. LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS: 1. Explain with an example what is meant by living things respond to stimuli. All living things are able to respond to stimuli in the external environment. For example, when our hand comes too close to a hot object we pull our hand away from the hot object. 2. How do living things grow? Some non-living things also grow. How is their growth different from the growth of living things? Growth in living things occurs within the organism by the division of cells. The growth of non living things occurs due to the addition of material from outside.(eg: growing of crystal) 3. List three ways in which living things reproduce, giving one example of each. 1) Some living things give birth to babies . Eg: humans, dogs etc. 2) Some lay eggs from which the young ones hatch or produce. Eg: birds. 3)Many plants are produced from seeds or spores. 4. List out four different ways in which organisms carry out exchange of gases for respiration, with one example of each. 1) Lungs: Most of the mammals breathe through their lungs.eg: humans 2) Skin: The earthworm breathes through its skin. 3) Holes: The cockroach breathes through several holes in its body. 4) Gills: Fish breathe the oxygen dissolved in water through their gills. 5. Explain phototropism and geotropism in plants. Are there any similar examples in the animal world also? Plant tends to bend towards the direction from where the light is coming in. This is called phototropism. Roots tend to grow towards the earth and stems grow against it .This is called geotropism. Animals also show response to light, for example, cockroach and earthworm move away from light. 6. Explain giving examples what you mean by a ‘species’? A species is a group of similar living organisms that have similar body parts, live in the same habitat, eat the same kind of food and reproduce among themselves. Eg: Each kind of organism like dog, cat pig humans etc are each species. HOTS QUESTIONS 1. Plants take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide during respiration all the time. Why do we then say that plants supply oxygen to the air? Respiration in plants takes place day and night whereas photosynthesis only takes place during the day. During the day, the amount of oxygen given out by them in photosynthesis is more than the amount of oxygen used up in respiration. So, during the day, plants supply oxygen to the air. 2. A car ‘eats’ fuel, ‘breathes’ air, ‘excretes’ smoke and ‘moves’ from one place to another .Why is it not considered to be living? Because it does not grow or reproduce. 3. Are living things matter? Matter occupies space and has mass. All living things have mass and occupy space. Hence, living things are matter. 4. Why does the population of animals living in jungles not increase as quickly as the human population does? The prey-predator relationships among animals in jungles keep a check on their population .Also animals do not have health facilities as they are available to the human population. 5. Cells are made up of molecules. Why then do we say that the structural unit of a living thing is a cell, and not a molecule. Because all the characteristic functions of a living being are carried out by a cell. If a cell is broken up into its different constituent molecules, each part will die. Hence the cell is the smallest structure that can exhibit life. ************************************************************************************
