Daikin at Chillventa: the Road to Next Generation
Refrigerants
Daikin will be present at the 2010 Chillventa International Trade Fair in Nürnberg, Germany.
At this occasion, parent company, Daikin Industries Ltd, will present its roadmap for future
refrigerants.
A comprehensive approach to the environment
A key aspect of addressing global warming is reducing energy use in buildings 1. Since
heating, cooling and ventilation are responsible for most of the energy consumption in
buildings, the focus by European policy makers and by Daikin is on improving energy
efficiency of such systems. For this reason, the theme of the Daikin booth will be focused on
energy efficiency: “Effizienz ist unsere Natur/Efficiency is our nature”.
However, future climate change models project that the emission of current HFC-based
refrigerants will increase substantially in the coming decades, primarily from a growing
demand for air conditioners and refrigeration systems in developing countries where HFC’s
are the candidate replacement for the current ozone-depleting HCFC’s.2
Consequently, research into refrigerants with a lower global warming potential (GWP) will
increase in importance. In this, not only the GWP of refrigerants needs to be considered, but
also the full lifecycle climate performance (LCCP) of the equipment in which the refrigerant is
used. Aspects such as energy efficiency, safety, required refrigerant charge, affordability of
equipment and early implementation are parameters that need careful evaluation.
Daikin’s pioneering concern for the environment
As a responsible stakeholder in the air conditioning and heat pump sector, Daikin continues to
take its pioneering concern for the environment seriously. Daikin currently uses mainly HFC
refrigerants R-410A, R-407C and R-134a, and non-HFC refrigerants R-744 (CO2) and R717
(Ammonia). These will remain good choices for various air conditioning, heat pump and
refrigeration applications in the future. Daikin intends to add more options to this list, for which
research is ongoing. For direct expansion systems in particular, R-32 for example has some
assets such as a lower GWP, increased energy efficiency and reduced refrigerant charge.
Daikin is committed to providing the markets with as much information as possible on the new
developments so that the best decisions can be made in function of the specific application.

Daikin Industries Ltd. will be presenting an overview of the road to next generation
refrigerants during the seminar titled “Refrigerants: A Sustainable Future” on 12 October 2010
from 10:00 – 12:30 at the Chillventa Congress, the day before the Chillventa trade fair.
During the trade fair, the Daikin booth will feature a refrigerant corner with an R-32 split air
conditioner and a VRV CO2 system on display in Hall 7. Daikin will also present its views
during the Forum discussion in Hall 7 on October 13th.
