3rd Nine Weeks Test Review
1. Scientists classify rocks by the method of their formation.
2. Where on Earth would igneous rock most likely become metamorphic rock?
An igneous rock would most likely become a metamorphic rock deep underground.
3. Describe what would happen as an igneous rock turns into a sedimentary rock.
An igneous rock would have weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction and cementation to become a
sedimentary rock.
4. What happens to temperature as you get deeper into Earth’s layers?
The temperature increases the deeper one goes into the Earth. Deeper = hotter
5. Determine the density of a metal that has a mass of 81g and a volume of 9 mL.
Density = mass divided by volume
81g divided by 9mL = 9g/mL
6. What force keeps the planets in orbit around the Sun?
Gravity is the force that keeps the planets in orbit around the Sun.
7. What type of plate boundary is shown? What geologic even will occur at this type of boundary?
→←
This is a convergent boundary. Mountains will occur if continental crust collides with continental crust.
Ocean trenches and volcanoes will occur if continental crust collides with oceanic crust. Volcanic islands form if
oceanic crust collides with oceanic crust.
8. What type of plate boundary created the Himalayan Mountains? Describe what is happening.
A convergent boundary created the Himalayan Mountains as the continents converged (collided).
9. At what type of plate boundary would a trench form? Draw arrows to show how those plates are moving.
A trench would form at a convergent boundary where continental crust converged with
oceanic crust.
10. How many other minerals would be able to scratch quartz?
Three minerals would be able to scratch quartz.
11. What states of matter are the outer core and inner core? What kind of model could you make
that would show that relationship?
The inner core is solid and the outer core is liquid. A metal ball floating in oil is a good model
of the inner and outer core.
12. Why is color not the most reliable way to identify a mineral?
Color is not the most reliable way to identify a mineral because a mineral may have multiple colors throughout.
Streak shows the true color of a mineral.
13. Marble is made when limestone goes through metamorphism. Describe what processes cause metamorphic
rock to form.
When limestone experiences extreme heat and pressure deep underground, it becomes metamorphic rock.
14. Label the tectonic plates.
15. Describe the age of rocks as new crust is formed at the Mid-ocean ridge.
The youngest rock is at the center of the Mid-ocean ridge because as the plates diverge (separate) magma rises
to the surface forming new crust.
16. The Great Rift Valley in Africa was formed when 2 plates moved away from each other. What kind of boundary is
that called?
What two plates move away from each other or divide, the boundary is called divergent.
17. Do all objects in the solar system have gravity?
All objects in the solar system have gravity.
18. Gravitational force is ______ the closer a planet is to the Sun.
Gravitational force is greater or stronger the closer a planet is to the Sun.
19. A planet’s revolution around the Sun is _____ when that planet is closer to the Sun.
A planet’s revolution around the Sun is faster when that planet is closer to the Sun.
20. Describe the characteristics of the inner planets.
Inner planets are rocky and terrestrial (earth-like)
21. A spherical-shaped object that has its own orbital path around the Sun is called a _____.
A planet is a spherical-shaped object that has its own orbital path around the Sun.
22. Saturn is very large but is not very dense. What characteristic of Saturn would cause that?
Saturn is an outer planet and the outer planets are made of gas.
