When we finish unit 4 we will be able… To identify the five senses. To learn that our senses help us understand the world around us. To identify the information each sense perceives. To learn how to protect our senses. sight hearing smell touch taste 1. Sight •Our eyes are sense organs that take in light and give us light. The eyeball is the main part of the eye. It´s surrounded by other protective parts that keep it safe. In the eyeball there are five main parts: the cornea, the pupil, the iris, the lens, and the retina. Pupil is the black circle in the middle of the iris. It lets light into the eye. The iris is the coloured circle in the front part of the eye. It can be green, blue or brown. The retina is the layer of cells inside the eye. It captures the light and sends information to the brain. The eyes are the sense organs of sight. Eyes are very delicate and need protection: Eyelids protect the eyes by opening and closing. Eyebrows and eyelashes protect the eyes from dirt. Lacrimal glands produce tears which keep the eyes moist. The eyes and the brain 2. Hearing • Hearing is the sense you use to capture sounds. Ears are the sense organs of hearing. • You have two ears, one on each side of your head. This is how you know which direction a sound is coming from. The ears capture sound vibrations and send them to the brain. The ear has three parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. • The outer ear is external. It captures sound through the ear flap or pinna. The sound travels through the ear canal to the middle ear. • The middle ear is internal. It consists of the eardrum and three small bones called ossicles. When sound reaches the eardrum, it vibrates. • The inner ear is inside your head. It consists of the cochlea. The cochlea receives the sound vibrations. The ear and the brain • The sound captured by the ear is received by the cochlea. The cochlea sends the sound through the auditory nerve to the brain. • The brain interprets the information. This is how you can distinguish different sounds: music, a humanvoice or a barking dog. 3. Touch Your skin is the sense organ of touch. It is through our sense of touch that we can feel different textures or temperatures. 4. Smell The sense organ of smell is inside your nose. In order to capture a smell, an odour must travel through the air, enter the nose through the nostrils and reach the nasal cavity. The smell receptors send signals to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The brain interprets the information. We can distinguish lots of different smells. 5. Taste The sense of taste allows you to capture different flavours of food. The tongue is the main sense organ of taste. The tongue is inside the mouth. It is covered with small bumps called taste buds. These taste buds distinguish four basic flavours: sweet, salty, sour and bitter. An apple tastes sweet, and tuna fish tastes salty. A lemon tastes sour, and coffee tastes bitter.
