How are minerals used today? • Environment in which a mineral forms determines the mineral’s properties and identity • Some minerals form on or near the Earth’s surface (tend to be silicates) • Some minerals form deep beneath the Earth’s surface ( tend to be nonsilicates) Mining • Process of removing ore from the Earth through surface or sub surface means • Miners are after ore, a mineral deposit large enough and pure enough to be mined for profit • Since the 1970’s miners must practice reclamation or returning land used for mining back to its original state Use of Minerals • Metallic minerals are shiny, bounce light, strong, and are good conductors of electricity • They are used in planes, cars, wiring, electronics etc... • Nonmetallic minerals are dull, may let light pass through and are good insulators of electricity • They are used in concrete, industrial materials, glassware, computer chips • Gemstones - Jewelry
