Warm Up (3/6/2017)
Instructions: Turn in Vocab Table Chapter 15 and
answer the following questions:
1. Why is Sickle Cell Anemia and Malaria an
example of natural selection?
2. What happens to traits that are more
advantageous in a population?
Lecture 1:
Darwin and Natural Selection
On the Origin Of Species
• Darwin’s book
On the Origin of Species
& Alfred Russel Wallace
On the Origin Of Species
• Darwin argued that variations in species
mattered.
Artificial Selection= intentional breeding for
certain traits to benefit humans.
Evolution by Natural Selection
Darwin compared processes in nature to
artificial selection and asked the question:
• In nature what drives changes in organisms?
Competition
• Struggle for existence – organisms compete
for resources (i.e. food, water, territory, mates,
etc.)
How is natural selection related
to a species’ fitness?
Survival of the Fittest
• Fitness: The ability of an individual to survive
and reproduce in a specific environment.
• Adaptation: Any inherited characteristic that
increases an organism’s chance of survival (i.e
fitness).
Darwin’s Question: What drives
changes in nature?
Natural selection= certain traits
are favorable
• Certain traits allow for
individuals to survive and
reproduce.
• Therefore, certain traits
increase in populations
resulting in changes in the
inherited characteristics of a
population over time.
Darwin’s Hypothesis:
Descent with modification:
each living species has
descended, with changes, from
other species over time.
• Results from natural
selection.
• Implies a common ancestor.
Summarize the Lecture
1. Describe the main points of the lecture. (In 3
complete sentences!)
2. Explain what was difficult for you about the
lecture. Why?
3. What do you think you could do differently
next time to make it easier for you to
understand the information presented? Why?
Kahoot
• Use your first name to sign up for the game.
(EX: Bart Simpson is Bart)
Closure: (3/6/2017)
• Explain what the term fitness means in your
own words.
• Explain what the term adaptation means in
your own words.
