Llama Antibodies: Small - Functional - Excellent
Background: Llamas, along with Alpacas, Guanacos, and Camels
are Camelids. Camelids are unique in that they have specialized IgG
antibodies circulating in their blood. Traditional mammalian IgG’s have
two heavy chains and two light chains, while Camelids have a
population of IgG antibodies that are composed of heavy chain only.
These specialized antibodies lack the light chains all together.
Other IgG antibodies, like: rabbit, goat, mouse etc., weigh 150 kDa
while Llama IgG’s only weigh 94 kDa.
Advantages of Llama antibodies:
The smaller size allows them to penetrate tissues, pass through
blood-brain barrier and bind epitopes that cannot be reached by
conventional antibodies. Excellent to use in immunohistochemistry.
Capable of recognizing a variety of epitopes, located not only on the
surface of a protein, but also buried deep in the clefts.
Robust antibodies with high tolerance to extreme pH and temperature.
Easy to clone because they consist of only one domain.
