Cells Why are cells so similar yet very different? Cells are the building blocks for life! • All living organisms are made of at least one cell • Many = multicellular • One = Unicellular / single cellular • All cells come from other living cells • Prokaryote – a cell that has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor specialized organelles • Eukaryote – a cell in which the genetic material (DNA) is found inside a membrane bound nucleus and has specialized organelles Cells are the basic unit of Life • Cells of the same function group together to form • Tissue – tissue forms • Organ – organs form • Organ systems – which work together to form • An organism!!!! What determines the structure of a cell? • It’s function in the organism Cross section of a leaf. Corn root tip. Leaf cells A magnified leaf cell. A nerve cell (neuron) Cells in the villi of the small intestine Liver cells. Red blood cells Red blood cells loose their nucleus to make more room for oxygen “Sickle” red blood cells vs. “normal red blood cells Blood smear with white blood cells A single celled organismParamecium Paramecium having eaten red dyed yeast. An amoeba, another single celled organism. One cell has to do it all! Photosynthetic algae Frog embryo Neural Tube will become brain and spinal cord A dissected rat… Just because Human egg cell and sperm cell An early human embryo- “just a ball of stem cells”
