Zhenyu Zhang, Department of Physics & Astronomy:
Interaction Between
Poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide) (PDMA)
and different surfaces
In recent years, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has provided a range of
new opportunities for viewing and manipulating microbial surfaces in their
native environments. A molecular force probe (MFP) is being used in this
project to investigate the interaction force between cell and surfaces by
stretching the cell from surface. Poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide) (PDMA) is
a good synthetic polymer to start as model polymer. The statistic analysis
of adsorption force between different molecular weight PDMA and silicon
oxide surface provides essential information of the polymer-surface
interaction.
During the adhesion of cells to the surface, a quartz crystal microbalance
with dissipation (QCM-D) makes it possible to detect very small mass
changes as well as viscoelastic properties at the interface.
