Unit IV: States of Consciousness
By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
1. Describe various states of consciousness and their impact on behavior.
2. Discuss aspects of sleep and dreaming:
a. stages and characteristics of the sleep cycle;
b. theories of sleep and dreaming;
c. symptoms and treatments of sleep disorders.
3. Describe historic and contemporary uses of hypnosis (e.g., pain control, psychotherapy).
4. Explain hypnotic phenomena (e.g., suggestibility, dissociation).
5. Identify the major psychoactive drug categories (e.g., depressants, stimulants) and classify specific drugs,
including their psychological and physiological effects.
6. Discuss drug dependence, addiction, tolerance, and withdrawal.
7. Identify the major figures in consciousness research (e.g., William James, Sigmund Freud, Ernest Hilgard).
By the end of today’s block, you should be able to:
1. Explain hypnotic phenomena (e.g., suggestibility, dissociation).
2. Identify the major psychoactive drug categories (e.g., depressants, stimulants) and classify specific drugs,
including their psychological and physiological effects.

Listen to the song and come up with my rationale for the song.
Part II – Lecture and Activities: Hypnosis and Drugs (45 min.) Whole Class
We will address these topics in relation to their effects on consciousness.
Part III – Group Activity: Classify the drug (35 min.) Whole Class
Your group will have 4 minutes to identify each of the seven drugs described on each sheet. We will go over the answers
as soon as you are finished.

The following assignment is due NEXT CLASS (November 13 and 14):
1. Read and take notes on pp. 313-326
